So I had these grand visions of gaming this weekend but didn't get around to sitting in front of my PC until Sunday night. Launched AoE 2 to play the Dracula campaign and decided...I can't really ever play this game again, it's just too old and back in 1998 I put probably 1000 hours into it...but that was then, etc. Then I launched Castlevania: Lords of Shadow for a few minutes and thought...damn this game is just too twitchy and on rails...can't do it. Deleted both games off my drive.
I think I've finally reached the age where I just don't struggle with a game anymore if it doesn't grab me within a specified amount of time, whereas just a few years ago I would keep pounding at these games, trying to force myself to like them. Not anymore.
On the flip side, earlier this year, I played Unity of Command for weeks, really enjoying learning it. Years ago it would have probably been too deep and serious a title for me to get into. So either now I am really ornery, really old or really mature. Maybe a combination of both. I am hoping this new found sense of a 'discerning gamer' helps me save money moving forward :)
But it also leaves me with the simple question: wtf am I going to play? I intended to 'cleanse my cleaning palette' after playing Rome 2 for about 6 weeks straight (and loving it). Do I just stick with what works and forget about trying to expand my gaming horizons? I'm leaning in that direction as Rome 2 has really been scratching my gaming itch lately, and Pontus beckons.
Don't you have approximately thirty games you haven't even played yet?
That I haven't played at all? No not 30, closer to about 5 or so.

Oh.
Maybe that is my total, then.
If you are looking for something to sink your time in, give EUIV a try. I can't be the only one new at this around here.
^From your thread I am really tempted but I have failed at every other Paradox title I have tried...they just don't click with me. Unless EUIV is truly different from previous games, I don't want to waste the money.
Since you tried, and liked, Unity of Command, maybe try some other entry level wargames.
Battle Academy is a great entry level.
Heroes of Stalingrad is as well, only a small step up from BA.
.
Definitely more discerning grog than ornery old bastard.
If you were an ornery old bastard, when you logged onto AoE, you'd have posted something "Damn kids, get off my server!" but in all caps.
Also not sure how many ornery old bastards paint themselves blue, in public. Don't know if you actually do that, but it would be one way to resolve doubt.
And, finally, solipsistic.platypus is pretty well damn convinced that you can't be an ornery old bastard without being older than him.
I generally play fairly complex games . I have EU4, CMANO and Flashpoint campaigns lines up. Yet, every time i sit at the computer to play .... I boot up Rome 2 and say "ok, just a few turns". Next thing you know it's 4 hours later
Either way, tastes change with age. I can no longer play traditional RTS games like warhammer. That why I can't get into air land battle. It's too much like an RTs
These days I just play a game until I cannot play it any more and move on. Usually I'll go back to it in a few weeks. The sad truth is my selection of games I enjoy is getting smaller as is my desire to continue to learn new systems. Unfortunately this also means games that I used to play I don't like going back to either because I've forgotten so much of the mechanics and it's more like a freaky deja vu experience and I quit and play something else. So there.
Try playing a really shitty game for a while or a demo of a really shitty game and you won't be able to wait to get back to the "To Play" list. The one with the Chinese instructions could be a good start. Or any game with Unicorns-- except for Age of Wonders. Maybe spend a day talking with the good citizens of Skyrim about what is new in their worlds (Hint: Nothing-- Ever) Or try a really bad mod to one of your games. I remember one for the original Combat Mission that put dairy cows out in the fields. But no matter where moved the camera, they were always watching you. I still dream about that one at night sometimes. I couldn't wait to get me back to my old, boring version of the game.
You guys are over analyzing. I say Gus is just an ornery old bastard.
Just don't burn yourself out on the one game you know you really enjoy or you won't have any fun if you can't settle on another game.
If it's PC games then you can't go wrong with these in my opinion. These are the only games so far not to be uninstalled at some point and they deliver each time.
Hearts Of Iron III + Semper Fi + For The Motherland + Their Finest Hour + Black Ice Mod, specifically the latest Black Ice (http://blackicemod.com/about) which is a complete historical overhaul of HOI 3 and the best WW2 grand strategy game I've played so far.
Fable, The Lost Chapters (http://store.steampowered.com/app/204030/)
Sid Meier's Pirates (http://store.steampowered.com/app/3920/)
Skyrim (http://store.steampowered.com/sub/28187/)
The Saboteur (On PC there's one caveat: the screen resolution must be set to one of the 1280 sizes because the in-game map of the city gets un-scaled if you don't. 1280x720 seems to be the best.)

If it was EUIII, I would say, you are right. Don't waste your time and money. It isn't that III is a horrible game, it is not, but, the trade system blows as well as how you get your money. In IV, they have streamlined things to the point where you can concentrate on other mechanics rather than babysitting your money.
Now, I will say that if you just don't care for Paradox titles, then IV is more of the same. I bought it for ten bucks a couple of weeks ago. I'll get my ten out of it and more. My advice is to hold out for your price point and get it then. You'll get what you paid for.
And to address your original problem, I have played long involved games as long as I have had a computer. Civilization, Hearts of Iron, Total War, etc. Each one of them scratches a particular itch, so, I go back to it when I feel it. In recent years I have added Warlock and CK2. I sometimes have, "I've fired the computer up, now what the hell am I going to play?!," syndrome, but, that'll pass. Read a book. Watch some tv. You'll come back to it.
Gus, remember as a kid when your folks went into a really good bakery? Everything looked so delicious. The cakes, the chocolates, the creamy toppings?
But if you were able to try a lot of them, maybe over a long time, after some tasting they lost their attraction. A lot of the eye candy was just on the surface, and it all came down to the blend of sugar, flour, and cream.
Finally you find the right mix of flavor and have a favorite pastry. The others still look good, but don't inspire that hungry, desire to eat them all. (Used to love rum cake, but now it's too rich and can't stand it.)
Same with games. You find what you like, and it's a waste to keep trying the ones you want to like, there's only so much time and energy in your days. This isn't being ornery, it's being mature and realistic.

I hear you Gus. These days gaming time is too precious to waste on a game that you have to force yourself to like. Like you I keep going back to the Total War series. Much to my surprise XCOM Enemy Unknown really grabbed me. It is the first game in ages that I have played to the end...twice!

I do like me some rum cake.
Ok so it seems that I have been diagnosed as older and more discerning and a bit of a bastard. I can accept that.
Ultimately I think this new found gaming selectivity is going to be a good thing...at a minimum it will save me money and if I think ambitiously it will probably save my sanity and even give me relief from my gaming OCD. I don't have to like aomething and I defintely don't have to force myself.to like something, like I have done for years.
Thanks Bart for the wargaming recommendations. And for reference I have played Pirates and finished it mulriple times. Played and finished Skyrim too. Next up will be he Dark Mod and some Shogun 2, Fall of the Samurai, and the Assassins Creed Black Flag.
Earlier games in those series have always made me happy.
I don't see why you should stop playing Rome II if this is the game your currentely enjoy...i've played some games for months and months (Knights of Honor, Master of Orion or Birth of the Federation to mention a few)...of course, now i still have "new" from the last 15 years i have to learn and play but i don't mind (i look at you Anno 1503 and others)...oh, and AO2 is still on my to do list (just played some scenarios but was too busy with AO1 back then).
All in all...enjoy the games you have fun with...
Only because I feel like I should mix it up a little. But I'm starting to not feel that way anymore.

Not being the youngest, i understand you very well. For long i had different games on my playlist...now i am limiting my games to a few i focus on at any time (less motivation to play, not enough time, too tired). Last month i played 2 games of Master of Orion II which i hadn't played for a long time and enjoyed them a lot. Now i am playing again Birth of the Federation. The motivation to play some games won't come up for a long time and suddenly you have the wish to play them...that's why i never completely dismiss a game and keep a door open.

Your avatar is wonderful. Oh, and some advice for Gus -- gaming is a kind of random and irrational thing. If nothing grabs my attention, I just go read a book or play a boardgame or watch TV. This weekend I suddenly decided I had to play a lot of CLOD. Okay, I sort of know why. I was feeling nostalgic for a lot of Buffalo scenarios I made in IL-2 long ago. I fired up Il-2 and realized I CANNOT FACE THOSE GRAPHICS ANY MORE. Well, the graphics in CLOD are probably the best anyone will see in quite a while (BoS is going to avoid the CLOD overly-detailed thing so it will probably not quite reach CLOD levels of graphic wonder).
Gus, you should be able to have your cake and eat it too. Be a discerning, ornery old bastard and embrace it.
I find myself being a lot more selective about titles than I used to be. In the last few years, the games I enjoy most are games that mix and match pieces in novel new ways. Examples from the last 5 years include titles like AI Wars, Eador, Din's Curse, or Space Rangers 2.
I find myself less interested in games that many others on these forums love, which are refinements on an existing genre. Titles like Rome 2, Civilization V, or Endless Space all leave me admiring the game system but just feeling "been there, done that".
The good news is, with a busy family life, I hardly have time to game these days anyways, so at least my reduced demand is more than offset by scarce supply! :D
im finding i end up buying games for either sentimentality or because theyre AAA and i think im supposed to like them and will miss out on them..... there are some really cool games out there but at last ive joined the ranks of the sensible and wont buy, because i know ultimately itll get 10 hours of play and never see light of day again
Im always jealous of the likes of MD and Anguille who can pour 1000s of hours into 1 game - im yet to find that one game but there are a few out there this year that might satisfy that itch
Just be more selective, over the last few months ive actually sat there playing game A wishing i was playing game B but because i thought i should like A and it was expensive i will play regardless of whether im enjoying it or not
Right now im very, very happy with EU4, CKII, Rome 2 and Banished which tells me im mainly ops as opposed to tactics but now that i know that i know what to buy and what not to buy
You're definitely as ornery and old as me.
So...will probably play Dark Mod tonight. I'm doing that because it is free and I want to recapture the way I felt when playing the older Thief games...and I don't think the new Thief can do that.

Why isn't whiny bitch an option?
Because we're not talking about (fill in blank with random forumer or your mom).
Gus, I think your gaming tastes have simply become more...refined. And when I say "refined", I mean that in its most basic sense, which is "free from impurities" -- the "impurities" in your case being games you simply can't get into (irregardless of how much they *theoretically* should appeal to you).
By this point, you've been around the block enough times that you know which games you're likely to actually get into (e.g., R2TW), rather than games you can only enjoy as a concept (such as EU4). Perhaps this wasn't a conscious process on your part, and perhaps it was; but either way the end result is still the same. In any case, I agree it's a good thing. :)

Sorry Castlevania LoC didn't work for you, Gus. :-\ I feel sad being one of those who sold you on it.
I'd strongly second the recommendation for The Saboteur (though I don't know about the PC version; the PS3 version wasn't buggy anyway), but my last rec didn't work out for you. :'(
Still. Red Dead Redemption: Vulgar Drunk Irish Bomber Saves Paris And French Countryside And Hookers From Nazis Edition.
It has merits, is what I'm saying. Lots of merits.
Behold.
Merits.
Edited to add: I should probably clarify that by "merits" I don't mean "boobs" although those were the merits the game was largely marketed on (and the reviewer follows suit, briefly). They're set dressing for one location, thrown the face of the player at the start of the game, clearly for marketing purposes, and that's it. The rest of the game is for all practical purposes
Irishiana Jones: Destroy All Nazis. It references the Indy movies action so consistently there's a side mission to rescue the Holy Grail (if I recall correctly, it's been a few years since I played it). It is the best Indiana Jones Movie Ever Made Not Actually Starring An Indiana Jones Expy Or Having Anything To Do With Archaeology Except For That One Side Mission Because Duh.

Sorry but, there were never any cows in any of the CM games.
Thanks Jason...I did enjoy Castlevania for while but the 'on-rails' feeling got annoying, and there were some points I just could not get past, which added to my frustration. Did you finish it?
There was a mod that put black and white dairy cows in the very green fields and whichever way you moved the camera, they were always looking at the camera. It was on the old Combat Mission site that had all the graphic and sound changes like the improved weather effects and grass textures. And another weird one, 3D Faces.
I remember that mod. I downloaded it and had it installed for about thirty seconds because it didn't really work. It was on MadMatt's CMBO site.
Gus,
Yes, several times. I think any mission can be dialed down to easy (though I never had to) and the puzzles can be mostly or entirely skipped over (you just don't get the xp for finishing them).
Of course, if the platforming and combat methods were getting too hard in themselves, neither of that would help. But being sure to pick up all the gems and spending xp wisely and knowing which attacks to use when helps tremendously -- it's a very tactical game on a moment to moment basis, in that sense. God of Warish, of course, but to be fair GoW melds Castlevania gameplay (down to the primary whip-weapon attack) with the Prince of Persia Sands games.
I'll attach my tactical notes and where the powerups are below. Maybe they'll be helpful.
The Saboteur definitely isn't on rails, by contrast. ;) And if you've already played it, may I recommend
Just Cause 2? It doesn't have all the distinct stylistic flavor notes of Captain Irishiana: The Murdering Avenger, but it has about ten times as much great sandbox 3PS gameplay -- a map 20 miles long and 20 miles wide with every imaginable climate and stuffed with content yet also with lots of quiet places to just admire the scenery (like Skyrim but much more varied and much larger).
And Yahtzee's review of The Sab for flavor, but the game is much better than his grumpy review lets on:
Quote from: JasonPratt on March 12, 2014, 03:27:35 PM
And if you've already played it, may I recommend Just Cause 2?
Just Cause 2 is a fun sandbox mayhem spree, conjuring up images of over-the-top 80s action movies. I had some seriously gut-busting laughs when I played it.
They also added a multi-player element in the last few months.
Thanks guys, I will look into both.
As for Castlevania, I was enjoying myself until the end of the first act when I was charged with killing a giant troll in a cemetery. I would reduce him to near-death, then stab him in the head as instructed, but he just wouldn't die. After 1000 tries I finally said 'f' it and rage quit.
Any suggestions before I get sucked back into a TW campaign?

EDIT: I found the Jew skill tree:
Jew
Sling of David: Casts the first stone at any enemy. Deals more damage if done perfectly, but can lead to self-injury if done improperly.
Level II: Increases the damage of your Sling.
Level III: Inflicts Attack Down and Pissed Off – forcing enemies to target you without using special abilities.
Level IV: Your sling attacks now bounce to a random additional target.
Level V: The more damage you have suffered, the more powerful your Sling becomes.
Jew-Jitsu: Utilizes a secret Jewish martial art to pummel your target with a Stunning strike.
Level II: Increases the damage dealt by your Jew-Jitsu attacks.
Level III: The more damage you have suffered, the more powerful Jew-Jistu becomes.
Level IV: After a successful attack, you are protected by a divine shield that stops the next hit.
Level V: Take another action if Jew-Jitsu knocks out your target
Circum-scythe: Slices off the Armor and Shields of your target while inflicting Bleeding damage to a sensitive area.
Level II: Increases the damage of your Circum-scythe attacks.
Level III: On a Perfect Success, Circum-scythe now inflicts two stacks of Bleeding.
Level IV: Circum-scythe now inflicts Defense Down.
Level V: Your Circum-scythe attack now leaves all other enemies Grossed Out.
Whirling Doom: Sends your dreidel bouncing between random enemies, stripping away all beneficial status effects from all enemies hit.
Level II: Increases the damage of all dreidel hits.
Level III: Dreidel attacks now bounce to more targets.
Level IV: On a Perfect Success, all negative status effects on the New Kid are cured.
Level V: Cleanse your foes with fire, inflicting Burning with all dreidel hits.
Plagues of Egypt: Summon a mix of Pestilence, Fiery Hail, Frogs, and Flying Insects to deliver woe unto all your enemies.
Level II: Sinners beware, your plagues now inflict more damage.
Level III: Each time you visit Pestilence or Fiery Hail upon your foes, your team gains Attack Up.
Level IV: Each time you visit Frogs or Flying Insects upon your foes, your team gains Ability Up.
Level V: You may visit an additional plague upon the wicked during your turn.
OMG I am going to throw up from laughing...

Hm. Like most quick time events I recall that one having multiple parts including maybe one place where you mash the button quickly; if you miss even one step you fail, maybe take a little damage, and have to spend a little time setting up a new try.
CV:LoC has several types of QT events. If you were failing that one repeatedly, I'm pretty sure the mostly likely reason is that you aren't good enough at QTEs to continue. (Some people just aren't.) So yep, delete and move on. :'(
I can confidently report that neither TheSab nor JC2 have QTEs. ;D
QTEs irritate me, like sand in my bathing suit.
^^ Then you are well-quit of CV:LoC (and no doubt its sequel). I also recommend avoiding the hell out of the God Of War series.
Note that if you ever get as far as the final Sands of Time game, the easiest way to work your way through most areas are QTEs, but if you fail you can just fight the guys straight. The bosses (for the final game) will need QTEs to beat, though.
If you haven't played Red Dead Redemption yet, you've accurately heard about its quality by now I imagine. No QTEs that I recall (all the way through the alternate epilogue Undead Nightmare campaign).
Hmmm... the Arkham games do require QTEs sometimes on boss fights though not always. On the other hand, each hand-to-hand combat itself is sort of like a highly polished variable QTE sequence.
If you have a PS3, the inFAMOUS duology is an excellent 3PS anime superhero sandboxer. I can't recall for sure there are no QTEs but I'm pretty sure they're minimal.
So to summarize and clarify - I just didn't mash my 'U' key fast enough to beat that goblin? That sucks.
U need to mash it as fast as...............
edited to remove discustingness.
I just can't mash it that fast. I like to enjoy my mashing.

QTEs irritate me, like sand in my bathing suit.
and you wear a thong!
Are you playing it on the PC, Gus? There might be a way to use a repeating keyboard to 'cheat' the QTEs which require rapid mashing.
A bit of research this morning indicates that LoC2 will does include an option to remove the QTEs, btw. (It just released.)
I also found a thread on a possible bug in the PC version at the very first troll fight where a circle-radius matching QTE (where you're supposed to tap the proper button once when the radius circles match) automatically fails by reading an input too quickly! The reporter was using a wired (therefore not a battery problem) XBox360 controller which demonstrably works fine on other games, and tested the effect by simply sitting back without touching his controller at all: the game auto-failed the QTE at the same spot every time before the circles reached the match-spot.
Don't know yet if he ever found a way around that. The thread was back last August. Possibly playing that fight on keyboard if possible...?
You are a gaming Matlock...yes that's the fight with the troll that I tried 1000 times, on PC...it's bugged?? Dagnabbit...
