Which was a good thing.

Didn't like that bit of a nasty streak she displayed though.

It definitely looks like she's being influenced by The Hound's abrasive personality. I really like the rapport between the two.

that was kind of my thought too.

I suspect by the end of it all, there's going to be a horse and maybe one of Littlefinger's hookers left.  They might be one in the same.

We are the Groginati.  We gave him the outline.

And then had him flogged when he deviated from it.  He fixed it all of the TV show, tho, so we helped with the reconstructive surgery on the scars.

I may have said too much.

Dude, I don't "know" that Joffrey dies either; I never read far enough in the series to know what happens to him.  But he's such a completely horrid little bastard, and is so obviously supposed to be hated, that you know he's going to come to a bad end.  ::)

Title: Re: Game of Thrones
Post by: MetalDog on April 09, 2014, 10:15:11 PM
Jack Gleeson plays Joffrey.  He is Irish and very reclusive.  Does hardly any pub.  As for whether or not he dies, you'll have to watch if you haven't read.  Although, with the glacial pace Martin writes, the shows creative team has said they will continue forward whether Martin has finished or not.  If that's the case, and it appears likely, I wonder what direction they will go.  Part of the fun of watching shows like this is to see if you can guess where the plot is going to end up.  I still think Jon Snow and Dany team up/get married in the end.  The dragons melt The Wall.  Everybody bands together just in time to stave off elimination and Arya turns into the most badass of them all.

Two part question:

1) Did you read the books?

and

2) Regardless of the answer to one, what did you think?  I didn't think they would do that this early in the season.  It's been coming (or at least, hoped for) since first introduced to that character.  If that's what this season is going to be all about, then I AM IN!!!

Read the books.  The next big death is the one that I've been looking forward to seeing since the show started.  Should be in the next couple of episodes I'd imagine.

I read a spoiler-heavy version.  (Since I'm never going to watch the show or read the remaining books, I don't care.)

All I can say is, FUCKING FINALLY!!!  In a crapsack world where almost every character is so boring and/or detestable that I stopped giving two shits about this series (and everyone in it) long before the end of the first book, it says a lot that I still hated this character enough to cheer -- out loud -- what happened in this episode.

And I think they are doing a totally awesome job with effects and with sets too...everything looked awesome. The Iron Bank...WOW.

****some spoilers for those who have not watched yet****

Is it just me or does the wildling army have worst leadership ever in coming up with battle plans.  They have over 100,000 people which I believe is an advantage of 1000 to 1 compared to the night watch.  But their attack plans consist of sending a handful of wildlings on a covert mission to attack from one side (this not a horrible plan since can loosen up defenses) and then have 2 giants and one mammoth attack the tunnel gate and roughly have five people try to climb the wall?  Seems like a recipe for disaster from the start.

Why not send a ton more to the gate...you have huge numbers so you can withstand big loses?   The night watch on the wall would have limited supplies to throw things down on them for long.  Why didn't they setup some kind of field artillery to suppress the people on the wall?  The one giant shot a single arrow which it did do some big damage.  Maybe they should have shot a few more?

Another thing I always wondered is why not focus on building ships and go around the wall?  Seems like a better plan then trying to go over a huge fortified mountain.  Better yet, why not divide the army and attack from the sea and multiple points across the wall, where defense castles don't exist?

I know I am over thinking it but after the last episode I couldn't help wondering if the wildlings had competent leadership ( wasn't mance supposed to be good) they might have done better:)
Title: Re: Game of Thrones
Post by: WallysWorld on June 10, 2014, 11:31:22 AM
Well, like Jon Snow said it was really just a probe or test of their defenses and not a full attack. Now the wildlings probably know that the Night's Watch has basically used up their defensive supplies and lost a lot of men.

I find that all of the "large" battle scenes depicted throughout the series have fallen far short of epic.  I'm not sure if this has to do with poor production, limitations in set/cast, or something else.  For instance, the battle for King's Landing was a joke. Battles that should last for days seem to last for a couple of minutes. Its one of the few areas in which the series has let me down.

Fair enough...but with a 1000 to 1 odds and the ability to overwhelm, just thinking they could have skipped the probe and smash the night watch:)

Yep. The Night's Watch is still up against it. No wonder Jon Snow came up with his idea on how to deal with it.

Interesting to note that a real person played the giant and it wasn't CGI:  https://tv.yahoo.com/blogs/tv-news/-game-of-thrones--giant-played-basketball-for-unc-174045416.html (https://tv.yahoo.com/blogs/tv-news/-game-of-thrones--giant-played-basketball-for-unc-174045416.html)

"That giant was played by an actual person, the 7-foot-7 Neil Fingleton. And if his name seems vaguely familiar, it's because he was a McDonald's All-American college basketball player!"

Haven't watched the show, but have read the books. It makes a lot more sense in the books. The wildlings aren't an army, more a collection of nomads under the loose leadership of Mance with a vague common goal of trying to get south of the wall to escape the white walkers.

Finally caught up in time for the finale. I'm with JH, the last episode with the Night's Watch battle was a bit underwhelming, but we can't compare GoT with something like LoTR even if we come to expect those kind of cinematic battles.

Post by: WallysWorld on June 15, 2014, 11:18:52 PM
Definitely it's the smaller TV budget which prevents huge battles like LoTR had. Same thing happens with Vikings and the Spartacus series. Vikings has a budget of $40 million for ten episodes as compared to over $100 million for a LoTR movie. Still I really liked the battle at The Wall even though it wasn't at LoTR's huge budget level.

Tonight's finale was once again terrific. As someone who hasn't read the books, the characters goings had me glued to the end.

As a reader of the books, most of what happened tonight was 'meh.'  The best bit was Arya and the Hound.  The worst was Daenerys.  I don't rant against the showrunners going off script to come up with their own situations and storylines, but, it gets a tad annoying when you can see that things are done for expediency or to make something fit that shouldn't have happened anyways.

Although a decent episode, nothing really stood out as that great or too unexpected.  Might be just me, but every scene that deals with Bran's storyline I think is a waste of time.  I am sure something important comes out of it at some point, but would prefer watching all the other plots.  I also wish they could consider a 2 hour finale where it gives them more time to tidy things up.

Still my favorite show and can't wait to next year....

Okay, that's a little freaky.  Why?  Because just earlier this morning when I first got out of bed, I was randomly wondering to myself exactly who Jon Snow's mother is.

While I don't care for the series, I'm still a sucker for a good mystery, and the identity of his mother is a puzzle that has long percolated in the back of my mind.

Wouldn't Jon's hair be lighter, if he were Targaryen?

Now take it to its logical conclusion.  Targaryen's marry brother to sister.  Jon (who represents ice) and Dany (who represents fire) will unite to save the world and then marry and rule together.  Thus, A Song of Ice and Fire.

Thank you, gentlymen.  I have always thought Jon and Dany would get together to save Westeros.  Truthfully, it never occurred to me to wonder who Jon Snow's mother was, so, when I saw that YouTube vid with the speculation that he was Lyanna and Rhaegar's, Jon and Dany made even MORE sense.

Sure did.  Martin is writing at a glacial pace.  And, as any one who has had the misfortune to read, 'A Dance with Dragons,' will know, the later stuff isn't very good.  So, I am looking forward to not having foreknowledge of how Benioff and Weiss are going to wrap this up.  I hope that it doesn't cause George to just give up, figuring that, 'I can't do any better than what they did.'

"Quigly is a big old Arctic wolf," Simpson said of the now-famous eight-year-old canine. "He's a very sweet wolf, but you'll see in one of the upcoming episodes that he has a darker side to him."

Quigly has appeared as Ghost — the "dire wolf" companion of Jon Snow, one of the show's principal characters — before and will make a return appearance on Sunday's episode.

LOL Windi.

No.  That was the Valerian steel sword he always carries around, given to him by his predecessor, Sir Mormont.  Remember?  It was swatted out of his hand in the hut, but he picked it up outside for the finish.

If you don't recall all that stuff, just blame it on old age or bad hearing.  Starting to work as an excuse for me.  ;)

As I didn't read the books, the series is very appealing to me. I know some who read the books are complaining about the series not following the novels, but for people like me, I don't know anything else but the show.

I wasn't referring to the straying from the books.

If people were freaking out about a wife in an involuntary marriage getting raped by her husband on her wedding night (in a medieval setting no less!), they're going to be carrying torches and pitchforks about what happened in this one.

In a related note; what a GREAT young actress. Such an intense scene would be especially hard for a kid to pull off, I'd think.

Well, a couple of episodes ago, Penny Dreadful basically showed a baby being cut up by a witch so yesterday's event is in the same realm.

From what I've read on the IMDB forums, the readers of the books are more upset with how the series and especially this season has differed from the books.
Title: Re: Game of Thrones

Apparently according to the GoT Showrunners, Martin specifically told them to do it this way.  So even though the situation in the books is currently different, it looks like this is where he intends for things to go.

I was a real Stannis the Mannis fan before last night.   :-\

Still, you have to sort of look at it from his point of view.  His army is dying in front of his eyes. His only methods of winning the upcoming battle are taken from him.  He's the only one of the faction leaders that has even remotely taken seriously the threat that's North of the Wall.  He's been convinced that he's some kind of chosen one by a woman who in his eyes has demonstrated that she's got the backing of a deity. If he turns around he's conceding his claim, and likely condemning himself, his army and his family to death when the Walkers come over the wall.

True or not, the character considers himself the only hope the world has.  From some of the knowledge I got from the books, he's sacrificed a lot for his soldiers before.  From his point of view, why should he be so selfish if he has a chance save his army, and perhaps everyone?  The character is intensely pragmatic, and as awful as this decision is, I don't think it was out of character for him as some do.

This is also important from a show standpoint to further demonstrate that the Lord of Light is perhaps no better than his opposite deity, the Other,  north of the wall.

Still, can't help but hate him now.  Maybe I'll get over it.

Although very tough scene to watch about the girl, I thought the episode was another step backwards, especially for being the second to last episode.  I thought it would be much more action filled after last weeks big battle.  i may be in the minority but think the story line with arya and Jamie and such seemed like a waste of time this week.  Maybe they are setting us up for something bigger later, but just seemed a little out of place.

Hoping the finale really delivers and next season they come back with a vengeance.

I think that was Robb Stark.  In the books he's younger than he is on the show, a teenager, and never loses a battle.  He just didn't play the political game particularly well and married wrong, not too much unlike Edward IV.

This has been my theory for some time now. I think it's a case of evil vs. evil. No god that requires human sacrifice has any business calling itself "good".

As f'ed up as it was,  we've seen the reprehensible magic of the "Lord of Light" do some powerful things- including bringing the dead back to life.  Perhaps this wasn't a sacrifice at all, it just appeared that way to test devotion.  Perhaps it is a transformation into something that will militarily help Stannis.  Time will tell.  Still it was awful to behold.

It would be really unfortunate for her if she got a resurrection.  The books make it a little more clear, but when the Lord of Light brings you back, he brings you back as you are, any damage that might have caused your death still intact, Ghosts in Beetlejuice style.

Oh, and I actually laughed at how corny that scene was of Danerys riding off to safety...  ::)

That looked so cheesy it could've used a chafing dish.

Oh f-ing snap!

All of the written source material is done.  Now, everyone is on the same page.  I'm glad it turned out the way it did.  It gives Benioff & Weiss the ability to go whatever direction they want.

Oh!  And best line of the night.  After Jon Snow finds out that Sam popped his cherry, "Well.  I'm glad the end of the world is working out for someone."

Second best line of the night.  John Oliver, on a story about corruption in the Canadian government, "Canada is just five hockey rinks surrounded by bears."

As for whether Jon Snow is really done for good, Harrington says producers have confirmed he's finished.

"I've been told I'm dead. I'm dead," said Harrington. "I'm not coming back next season."

Game of Thrones show runner Dan Weiss says fans should accept the fact that Snow, and actor Harrington, will not be resurrected.

"Dead is dead," Weiss told Entertainment Weekly.

"We would hope that after seeing the scene and the way it's shot that the answer to that will be unambiguous in the minds of the people watching it."

I'm not sure how that works contractually. Kit Harrington is signed on for the show by contract through Season 7. He even received a significant raise along with the other A-tier actors on the show. Why negotiate a contract and pay an actor a raise if you are just going to kill him off...doesn't make sense, from a legal/economic perspective.

There is so little left to hang my hat on with this show now. With Jon gone, I don't give a flying f*** about whats going on in the north anymore. The queen of dragons has gone wandering off on another time sucking sub-plot and the only possible interesting bit is if Tyrion, GreyWorm and Varys make a reasonable go of it managing the city. I completely agree. I only have a passing interest in seeing Ramsay Bolton horribly murdered. All other plots, now that Snow is gone, can kiss my ass.

Its funny how the apparent death of Jon Snow has COMPLETELY overshadowed the apparent death of Stanis. Nobody is talking about his demise.

Jon's going to warg into his wolf (hence the foreshadowed name "Ghost") and you'll get him doing voiceovers.  He's "dead" in that Jon Snow's body won't come back, but they need Kit under contract for the voices.

Or not.

Stannis' act during the last episode lost him a lot of support from GoT viewers so his passing isn't really being missed. I know when I saw what happened to him last night, I had no sympathy unlike Snow's apparent death.

On side note, with Cersei's walk of shame, what the heck was the Lannister army doing while their queen was being humiliated? You saw the guard let her by at the castle at the end of the walk, but that was it. Is the young king that useless or indecisive that he couldn't order his guards to at least rescue her from that walk? Is the High Sparrow that powerful and feared that the Lannister army is cowed before him?

Jon Snow is absolutely dead.

However, there is absolutely zero chance he stays dead.  Or well, to be more clear, Jon Snow may be dead, but if he has Azor Ahai in him, then he may be resurrected as something else.

Melisandre really believed that Stannis was Azor Ahai, you could see it in her eyes when the reports came in that Stannis' men were running off.  Moreover, she went right back to the wall, to the next person she had on her list as a possible candidate.

The show left out Lady Stoneheart, so we haven't gotten to see what happens to a known dead character coming back thanks to the Lord of Light.  It's certainly not pleasant and it can only be passingly referred to as a "resurrection", especially if Jon Snow has Azor Ahai running around in his head.

Martin is on the record as saying he was really fascinated by the death of Gandalf and his rebirth as someone the same but different.  I think this is where he's going.

Statements of the show runners and actors have zero credibility.  They didn't bring in Lady Stoneheart because they wanted Jon's return to be something unique and horrific.  They're going to lie to the audience to keep that shocking reveal shocking.

Or I could be wrong, and my conclusions based on my book knowledge might be off.  However, I'm on record now saying "Jon" comes back.  I mean really, if he doesn't, what's left but a Zombie Apocalypse?

Oh, and for they that are in the know without spoiling L+R=JS.  Martin's all but admitted that fan theory is right.  If it is, there's no way they don't explore it.

It is, but it's a particularly strong one.  I tend to adhere to it.  Martin danced around the subject of this once, and remarked that the fans had gotten a pretty big plot twist correct, and this was one of the reasons that he'd slowed down because he wasn't going to discard it, but he had to make it more interesting.

This.

The first guy resurrected (Dondarrion) was done with the assistance of the red priest dude (the other notable one in the kingdoms, Thoros) so with Melisandre conveniently back at The Wall when Jon gets killed...

Yeah.  He may well end up one of the ever-resurrected, with the priestess there for the required assist.  Like Dondarrion.

Not showing Stannis 'death' and Melisandre at The Wall when Jon Snow gets 'killed' leads me to connect the two males with Azhor Ahai, the Red god's champion.  Melisandre had Stannis believing he was the savior.  Maybe, the savior is a combination of Stannis and Jon.  That satisfies what Kit Harrington said about his character being dead and not being resurrected AND explains why we don't see Stannis die.

Cersei will either change, or she will conspire with Baelish (whose enterprises have been negatively affected) to eradicate the Sparrows.  If the latter (and I certainly hope it is the latter) then she will, undoubtedly, manipulate her son the King, to destroy the Sparrows.  She may even kill that one Nun with her own hands.

I found it interesting that the Night Watch oath was quoted in that video.

Quote
Night gathers, and now my watch begins. It shall not end until my death. I shall take no wife, hold no lands, father no children. I shall wear no crowns and win no glory. I shall live and die at my post.

Well, Jon Snow is dead.  So now he (or whatever he may become) is free to marry Danaerys and take a crown.  Perhaps as Azor Ahai, driving the Others back into the far north, with Danaerys' dragons at his side.

QuoteGame of Thrones to start killing off characters from other TV shows (http://newsthump.com/2015/06/15/game-of-thrones-to-start-killing-off-characters-from-other-tv-shows/)

After the shocking finale of the latest Game of Thrones season, the producers have decided that the only way to make the show more shocking is to kill off characters from other TV shows.

"Well, frankly, we're running out of characters on our programme," said showrunner David Benioff.

"If we kill off anymore then season six will just be one long monologue from a character no-one really cares about."

"We also want characters' deaths to be shocking and surprising. What could be more shocking and surprising than Game of Thrones killing off a character from another show?"

It is understood that Penny from Big Bang Theory could be a victim of Game of Thrones shocking new direction.

"Well, I don't want to give too much away," continued Benioff.

"But imagine if Penny and Leonard have a romantic misunderstanding, and so decide to go a trip together up to the lakes. Penny could be teaching Leonard how to fish and all of a sudden Jamie Lannister runs out of a cabin and cuts her head off?"

"I mean, no one would have seen that coming, would they?"

Other potential twists could be Arya Stark murdering Special Agent Gibbs from NCIS while he slept, Gregor Clegane pulling Homer Simpson's arms off, and Brienne of Tarth decapitating Leanne Tilsley over the bar in the Rovers Return.

I'm still at Season 3, very good so far.  I was work travelling too much up until last year, so didn't have time to hit the series then.  I never got into much fantasy book reading beyond Tolkien when I was younger (I was more sci-fi).  Probably a good time to pick up Martin's first book and give it a go to see how the series compares.

By far Tyrion played by Peter Dinklage is my favorite character (definitely has the best lines).  Lord Varys and Tywin Lannister close seconds.  I couldn't care less for anyone from the Iron Islands though - what a miserable place and people.

I still think Jon Snow is integral to the story.  So, I will not be convinced until the evidence is overwhelming to the max!  And no, five versions of, "For the Watch," are not enough evidence.

Wait until you see Tyrion in court.  Emmy worthy performances... and he won!  2nd time he won for Game of Thrones.

The TV series is a hell of a lot better than the books, that's for damn sure.

I completely agree.  While the story is good, the actual writing is horrible.  Martin is technically competent but ridiculously verbose to the point of insanity.  Also why I don't rate Tolkien.  Oh and the endless lists!  The books are a long, hard slog, far too steeped in olde worlde nonsense, and a difficult read as opposed to enjoyable.  I'm utterly content to get the rest of the story from the TV series thank you very much.
