So I thought I'd plug my joystick in - give this a look again.
well **** me if I don't have a CLUE what's going on. That stoopid bint next to me is yacking every single time about "Transmitting rendevous point now" - which invariably leads me (read ALWAYS) to one of those awful time traveller highways!
Then when I get to "Cuspid Point" or whatever it is, I get the same message from her - and it's back to another highway to go to Westgate or Watergate or some such place. I've just spent 15 minutes in highways going from one to the other and being led there by her.
On top of that, I can't seem to see anywhere what my mission is, I don't get (understand) the maps, Sector, Galaxy, Zone or otherwise.
I am just totally and utterly lost in it. I've looked at the control configuration - but can see anything that helps me. On top of that unless I get to a gate that "ends", I'm told to exit the highway - and I don't know how to do it. At one place, I mashed the keyboard and hit some key and managed to exit - but I have no idea what key it was.
I'm just totally and utterly confused by it. The whole interface.
On top of that, it still looks dire to me...it really does!
To exit, just hit a directional buying "WASD" I think until you pop out. For example, if you are on the top trail if you hit up one more time you'll pop out if you're in the far bottom trail at the bottom teeth one more time to pop out. If you look at your key configuration there is also another key that automatically pops you out I can't remember my easier something like that just look at your configuration.
Thanks. I thought I did that - but perhaps not.
I wish I could help with your campaign issues but I always just play sandbox

Not a bad idea. I may just try sandbox instead of whatever storyline the campaign has.
The mod that allows you to talk to everyone in space stations without walking in - has that been updated over time? That station walking stuff was crap and literally made me nauseous. Don't think I could play long without modding that out.
Good god. >:(
Does anyone else's mouse disappear when you stop moving it. I like to use my X52 Pro for flying but like to use the mouse in game for selecting menu options and objects to interact with and for selecting dialog options - but the mouse disappears when you stop moving it. Even more annoying, you select something with the mouse and before you can do anything, the "selection" goes back to whatever you are pointing at in your crosshairs with the joystick or nothing if there's nothing near your joystick crosshairs.
I can't seem to get to dock to a thing. I haven't come across a menu to dock. I select a station on my map and then operate the comms button - and I get a trader or some other NPC but no station options.
lol - I actually do not know how to dock. I've just "found" (read stumbled across) a new docking platform and I've been informed it's been added to the database - but I do not have a clue on how to find out where to dock or how to.
I'm positive when I first got this that you moved your cursor over the object which gave you options - and I'm getting NOTHING showing up now.
Definitely an exercise in futility this.
I found a "trade option" now...by having my mouse cursor over a first aid kit at a station...no idea how to get to it, see what it is, buy it...nothing. >:(
I had hoped this had come along since the last time...it's been a while since I fired it up...but I have no idea how to find out what to do or how to do things...and I've been through the control options - but there's nothing there.
I think part of the problem seems to be that my mouse isn't "persistent" - so I can't highlight and interact with anything

Truthfully, doesn't sound like a testament as to how far the game has improved since release...it sounds more like your frustration over not being able to figure out how to play the game. :P
It's an interface - it shouldn't need to be rocket science.
I've spent an hour travelling about and I haven't been able to dock anywhere.
So fine - I'm pretty sure if this was a problem in game, then there would be a lot of noise about it - but I hang about here - so I don't know if there is or isn't. What I DO know is this - I should be able to "somehow", fly up to a station, select it, comms with it and dock - and I've spent an hour in game and have not been able to do so.
When I originally fired up the game, I could - and now I can't. So something is wrong somewhere. I can see the little floating icons telling you there's a bar there or there's a mission or whatever - but I have NO CLUE how to get to those
Like I originally said - I used to be able to dock when the game first came out...that was without reading any manual or doing anything special. I could do it...just like that. But I can't now - so something has changed or something is broke...either with the game or my configuration.
And as I said - it's an interface - you shouldn't need to go that deep to play.
NM - I'll figure it out or dump it. I've got plenty of other games that cause me less frustration.
Sounds like playing the old Battlecruiser series without the manuals :P

To dock, just click on the icon floating above the station...either a "C" a wench, a missile, etc depending on what is there. Click on the icon and the menu to dock pops up.
The game is fine, it's just not that hard to get around on...Lol. Sometimes though people have a tough time with a given game. The problem with rebirth isn't the bugs anymore (there are some but not a ton) but the general game. It's just not x4...
I was disappointed in that but have now just excepted it for what it is: a space trader game.
I will try to help people when I can but like judges issue with the campiagn: I any help because I don't understand the problem. I haven't experienced it. The people tell me where to go, I follow the signs and go there. If there is a bug (which there may be) I don't have it. My cursor doesn't disappear.
As for the mechanics, just like AoW3, you learn those by doing the tutorial. If you can't, then it is difficult. Play the first few sections of the campaign and you will learn most of what you need.
To trade you have to have found an offer. You also need to own a trade freighter (you can't carry goods in your ship). You go to your trade menu and purchase whatever you want. Your freighter will go there and load up.
I know your frustrated...lol. It's a decent game but you can't just jump in and play. I never could with the x series.
When a game has big issues when it first comes out and keep some of its issues later on some people just have problems with running it. Maybe it's all of the Band-Aids that were applied over the code that doesn't agree with systems but look at in the Nefaro and Rome 2..the guy has tried as hard as he can to work with this game, play it and enjoy it but it just doesn't work right for him no matter what he does. not his fault. game doesn't like his computer for some reason.
Maybe the same here for you. Something isn't clicking.
Thanks mikeck.
As I said in my post to JH - I remember being able to dock...and it wasn't difficult. The problem seemed to be my mouse was in and out....activated and de-activated all by itself. As soon as I moved the mouse, the cursor would show. Within a split second of stopping moving the mouse, the mouse cursor would disappear. Ultimately - that made it impossible to select any items. Any docking stations, any objects etc because the mouse wasn't working long enough to keep the object selected so I could see a menu and select an option.
So the very simple menu system wasn't working for me. As I stated in my post, my mouse kept disappearing. I'd select an item and where there used to be a menu system, there wasn't. I wasn't getting anything and in fact within a split second of selecting any item, the item would be de-selected.
I have however restarted and I am actually able to double click an item to bring up a menu system to operate. This wasn't working for me. I wasn't bitching about nothing. It is now.
I'm pretty sure I mentioned this mouse issue way back when this was released and there was an active thread on the game...though I do think I was still able to dock at the time.

The issues (as I suspected) were controller related. I wasn't bitching about not being able to trade etc...just that I couldn't interact with anything. I simply mentioned the "trade" thing because I was came across an option as I was flying through a station - but whilst I could see the icon I couldn't interact with it.
It's all good. I'm out now.
No I get it..and the problem is worse because when a game comes out loaded with bugs, you can't tell whether the game is jacked up or you aren't doing something right
^Again, Battlecruiser :P
I never played Battlecruiser. In my opinion, rebirth on its own is a decent space trader game. It is a poor follow-up to X3. So I choose to take it as a specs trader game with good graphics and immersive play and I enjoy it. I do get the disappointment people feel for the design decisions though...so I quit advocating for it. I play it is silence when no one is around so they can't see me...my vice
Yeah. I do not think it is fair to even mention battlecruiser in the same thread as Rebirth.

Thanks for the help those who helped and sorry for being a bitching baby to the others.
Now that this is working, I actually noticed some pretty cool things last night.
First, taking out a bigger ship. They do look spectacular going up.
The second thing is that you can target specifics...so you can take their turrets out.
Does anyone know if you can get ships to surrender? Are there any "free" ships about, like in X-3? And how exactly do you start a trading game without a trader. With X-3 you at least started with a trader when selecting a trading game.
I'm still not sure I like the graphical style. It seems really garish to me and not as crisp as I thought a 1920x1080 with all settings on max would look on a modern game. Maybe it's me or I've missed a setting - but there's nothing else in the settings menu I can turn up. I'll have a look about the interweb tonight

You only fly the ship you start with. No new flyables. I think you can turn them into AI-run trading vessels on automated paths like X3, although I'm not sure if you ever get to build or anything.

Going overboard on the post-processing effects and bloom is a regular happenstance these days, unfortunately. While some of it is nice, there has been a trend of turning it up to 11 which just makes everything washed-out and blurry.
I believe some of them do it to cover up how bad the lower res models look when being displayed at higher resolutions with poor or no scaling to offset the 'stretch'. Diablo 3 looks this way to me, along with the campaign map army & agent models when zoomed out in TW Rome 2. The latter also has some annoying light filters (another post-processing effect) which changes the colors of the scenes. They just blur it over in an attempt to blend the edges and textures a bit but it just ends up looking like someone smeared vaseline over the screen.
Ultimately, I think it's done because the graphics engine isn't efficient enough to reliably use a good Anti-Aliasing method without bogging down most everyone's computer. So instead of smoothing the jaggies out of the edges and making everything look crisp & clean, they just blur the whole scene and add too much reflected light to emulate your being half-blind. In the hopes that you can't focus on how bad the models and textures look at hi-res. ;)
Just say no to bad post-processing effects! :P

You weren't bitching. It's frustrating when stuff doesn't work. The situation with the joystick controls was ridiculous. Glad you got going .
Do ships surrender? Yes and no. They don't if you fire at them (capital ships) but if you board them with marines they will

Ahhhh. I had attacked a large trader. Took it all the way down to 1% and never got the option for them to surrender - so I just totalled it.

Yeah I remember you couldn't fly them being mentioned when the game came out. I'm not sure that's a big deal for me...just so long as I can get to trade. I'll have to get some money and hire some marines...take a ship then get more money to get a crew! Sheesh!
I'll look at the effects...see if I can't turn something off that makes it look crisper and less cartoony!
So - what's the best way to get money? I took a couple of jobs yesterday but they netted me a ridiculously small amount bearing in mind I have to get 50,000k+
I was all excited when I got my 88,000 in the bank. Ran off to find the ship trader again and couldn't buy - then I realised the 55,000 he wanted was 55,000K :-[

I suppose I could play without joystick!
I got the impression it was originally meant to be played with mouse & keyboard anyway.
Perhaps it's part of the reason it's such a pain to get it running well with a joystick?
It'll be definitely linked - I'm sure of it.
What's more annoying to me is that we "still" have controller issues in games even now. Why can't I plug my X52 into my computer and play a space flight sim? It's not a new stick. Using a joystick AND mouse is not new technology. It's not a new thing. People have been doing it for years.
I actually can't recall if I used my X52 with any of the X3 games I owned or whether I used my mouse. If I did use the joystick, I didn't have these issues, but then you interacted with things differently iirc.
Perhaps I'm stuck with the mouse then >:( And here was me thinking it's 2014! ;D
Having said that, there's a few things I might be able to try in that Steam thread...
I think they wanted it played using the xbox controller. Seems like Elite does too frankly. That said , getting the joystick to work was a pain
I dunno.. from what little I played of X Rebirth (and the X series) they seemed to do best with mouse anyway since you have an actual weapon aim point you can still move around, separate from steering.
I never considered using a joystick with them because they didn't really need it. You get finer aiming with a mouse and since you're in space you don't need to roll and pull or anything like an aircraft sim.

I last played the game around version 1.17...
Bugger. I thought point 2 on that list would mean it was fixed! :(

SoM...it's as "ready" as it's gonna get. Minor issues here and there but it is what it is now. The main complaints are design issues. Generally things work the way they are supposed to...generally

No - might be stuck with mouse...which may or may not be bad. It'll be bad initially I guess...as I'm used to using the joystick...but I'll likely get used to it.
Ok, better find my Xbox controller then :P
I was considering this one, but If I can't get my Saitek X-52 Pro, rudder pedals and Track IR going with this, I guess I need not apply.
I'm really itching to use my setup in a space game. It's a shame the Space Sim genre is in such a state of disrepair.
Yeah - sorry I can't report anything more positive.
It worked, then not, then did, then not etc, etc....
Currently, I'm using the mouse. I fire it up with the joystick attached in the hope it kicks in...but 99 times out of 100(?) I have to restart and go for mouse.
I did find that you can point at an object with your joystick and press F which brings up a menu - but I have NO IDEA how to select any of the options from the "sub menu". I've looked in the controller options and can't find anything that specifically refers to these sub menu options
Really guys.. I'm sure this was tailor-made for the mouse & keyboard.
I never even considered using my joystick and TIR after first playing it with a mouse. ;)
I never had a problem with the stick and X3. I eventually got it working fine with my Logitech stick. Just takes some time and from what I understand, compatability with joysticks has been improved with patch 1.30. My complaint now is the sectors with fog. I tried the "no fog" mod but everything is still hazy. Slows frame rate and frankly...looks dumb

That's fair enough - but I think for a modern day game to omit controller options is - well, not right.
Like I said - I might get used to a mouse and KB - but I didn't buy my X52 Pro to look nice on the desk. ;)
Having read of all the problems with configuring your Joysticks or whatever folk call them these days have you had a look at Xpadder (http://www.xpadder.com/)? I use that for any game that does not seem to have a way of configuring a pad or stick, really makes a lot of difference, you just map the keys to the buttons, run it before loading the game you want to use it for, create or load the profile for the game, load the game. Much easier and in my case a 100% success rate.
