Rather than derail another thread, I thought it would be best to start a new one on this topic.

Greybriar if you could please post a bit on that Colonization mod, looks inteesting....

The first thing I noticed is that at the start of a custom game you are given a Jesuit Missionary equipped as a Pioneer and a Colonist equipped as a Dragoon. Yay! No worry about horses for a Scout.

The map is rougher--more hills than flat land--and I got the "not enough food" message nearly every time I tried to build my first colony. But that isn't really as much to worry about as it is without the mod. Especially since one of the three options about your colonies is to have a food bonus (the other choices are for more crosses or more Liberty bells).

The natives are more likely to declare war on you if you colonize their land without paying for it. As the French I had more of a problem with this than in the vanilla game.

It seems to me that other nationalities build more colonies and at a faster rate than in the vanilla game. It reminded me a lot of the older Civilization games.

There are more female colonists than in the vanilla game. At least one more--the Weaver. I can't remember if there are more than that or not, but that makes at least twice as many as there was in the vanilla version.

Galleons can only carry two treasures per load instead of the six in the vanilla game. That isn't so bad considering that in the original Colonization a Galleon could only transport one treasure.

So far I am enjoying this mod. I think it improves upon the base game and makes for a more enjoyable gaming experience.

Hopefully that will get the ball rolling and others who have played this mod can add their thoughts and experiences.

Regardless of how good a PC game may be it will always have its detractors and no matter how bad a PC game may be it will always have its fans.

Very interesting and thanks for sharing your thoughts.  I hope anyone else who has played this mod can share some insight as well.  I have the game but I deleted it from my HD after being disgusted with how it played.  I set my expectations way to high and then they came crashing down around me. :(

Thank you Greybriar. I was also really disappointed because I had such high hopes for the newer Colonization.

You're welcome guys.

I was a rather outspoken critic of Sid Meier's Civilization IV: Colonization when it was released, but I still played it once in a while when I had 15 or 20 minutes to kill. At least the graphics were an improvement over the original and some new ideas added to the playability of the game. But so many other aspects of the original were done away with in the "re-imagining" of the new game that it really got my dander up.

This mod has made some changes for the better in my opinion. It isn't perfect but it makes the vanilla game easier to swallow.

I thought of another change--the starting ship (Caravel) has +1 movement in the mod; at least the French do. I haven't play any other European power, but I imagine all starting ships have the +1 movement.

I've also been playing with the mod a bit and it has definitely rekindled my interest in the game.  Along with the improvements Greybriar mentioned, it adds new victory conditions, achievements, new Founding Fathers, random events and missions (at least I don't recall missions in the original game).  And before someone corrects me, by "missions" I mean quests, not those things that convert natives.

Anyway, it turns a "meh" game into something worth playing again.

Thank you, GB, for the heads-up.
