Apparently the digital chart they were using was off by 8 miles on the location of the reef. OTOH they were warned by locals that they were headed for the reef.

The real problem is that we only have 14 of those MCM ships in the fleet and the LCS ships that are supposed to replace them have been a procurement nightmare.

Shhhhhh...  don't tell anyone, or they might do their research and learn that you can shoot your way out of a counterinsurgency, but it's going to be very, very brutal, and very, very ugly, and the US population probably doesn't have the stomach for it.

Avowed Apple fanboy here, but even I have to admit that Apple's mapping app was a train wreck.  The thing is, if the dominant mobile map software had been made by anyone not named "Google" then Apple wouldn't give a rip.  But because they see themselves in some sort of existential showdown with the Goog, they had to go after one of their best, most useful, and most stable apps.  Dumbdumbdumbdumbdumbdumbdumbdumb.
