I agree. If he doesn't feel he is up to the job because of his health, it is entirely rational that he retires and gives what must be a potentially demanding job to someone with more energy.

...and on a serious note, as a [non-practicing] Catholic, my best wishes to the soon-to-be 'emeritus pope'.  I think he is doing the right thing by stepping down if he feels he can't fulfill his duties.

He stepped down yesterday.  He vowed to be obedient to the next Pope.

I think this was a profoundly humble thing to do.  He recognized his inability to fully carry out his office and stepped down.  How many people in human history have ever voluntarily stepped away when they held high office?

PS - Maybe the Pope decided to give up being Pope for Lent?

Agreed. It takes true courage and wisdom to relinquish power at the appropriate time. It is an amazing act after 600 years of precedent in the other direction.
