My computer has been in the shop all week, and it appears I will have to replace it (Hello, Windows 8!). Anyway, in the meantime I'm using the wife's computer, and I thought I would download something from Gamesgate to play on it, but I couldn't remember my password. I entered my email address with a request to have it sent to me, but all I get in reply is a link to the home page - which requires the password before I can do anything. This has happened three times, and I've written support twice with no reply.

I understand your frustration bud, and yes, their customer service sometimes takes a riduculous amount of time even to receive a response, which is usually useless.  However, I'd be remiss if I did not state the obvious...

I've always had very good customer service with them.. Alway's gotten quick attention from them, and I've contacted Customer Service a few times (All issues were not their fault, most like serial keys run out or whatever)..

I will be curious to hear about your experience with Win 8.  I have a laptop with it...and it has been pretty problematic.  In fact, strangely, the GamersGate site wont even run.

Believe me, I would prefer 7.  Talking to the people at Best Buy, Microsoft set a date at which point all Windows 7 machines had to be taken off the floor, and could no longer be sold.  It's also not possible to downgrade from 8 to 7 because the drivers are different.  I have to get the new system from Best Buy because I have credit there, and cash is tight.

^Bestbuy has one of the worst credit programs in the country.  Use it for what you need and then close it! 

As for Windows 8, I guess I'm one of the lucky ones...so far, so good. Fingers crossed.

ditto -- honestly, i can't see any good reason to get Win 8 at the moment.  I know it's the future, but do I really want to exchange (A) my familiarity with win7 and (B) reassurance that I can play all my games on it for (C) Window 8's fabulous new Mac-inspired touchscreen-esque extravaganza?   Not even a little bit.

What about buying a Macbook or MacMini there and installing Win7 through Bootcamp or Parallels? What is your budget? MacMini's start around $600. $800 for more beef. It's no gaming powerhouse but it should be able to run games as well as a midrange Windows box. Win7 Pro 64bit OEM is going for about $140, Home edit. for about $100. Sometimes you can find new copies on Ebay for less.

If you want to stick with a Win7 box then buy online or use their 'availability' thingie to see if there are any Win7 computers at another Bestbuy further away. Bestbuy shows about  300 win7 types currently online. Many might be old listings but a quick peek shows some that ship in  a few days.

Also, JH is right. Pay that BB card off as fast as you can. If you are even a few days late with a payment or miss that 'no interest' pay-by deadline then after that Best Buy will give you the financial equivalent of a surprise colonoscopy every time you open your card statement.

I'm working off Daughter #2's laptop, which uses Windows 8. Initially it's counter-intuitive. It's Windows suddenly woke up with the idea that it wanted to become a bad imitation of Apple.

After using it for a while I have learned how it works. Even so, it still does dumb stuff. When I view an image it takes three mouse clicks to get back to the desktop. Dumb.

Getting to the control panel is a PITA. I still haven't figured out how to do simple stuff like pull up the Accessories folder and get to a calculator. The startup tiles screen is something I ignore at every opportunity.

Given the choice I'd go with Win 7. But if my gaming rig gets replace I may not be given the choice. So far I can say I've found a single feature on Win 8 that I like better than Win 7, though the laws of random chance mean I'm likely to eventually find something.

These complaints are not really Window's fault though...you just haven't learned how to use it yet.  Yes, its always a pain being forced to learn a new system, but that doesn't mean its less convenient in the long run, or worse, is actually broken.
