Friend pointed me to this site.  Lots of games from the 1980s and 90s.
Not free anymore, apparently they are having trouble keeping it going.  However, they do offer some classics like Master of Orion, Armada 2525, Emperor of the Fading Suns, etc.

Edit: I'm removing this link. There is no such thing as "abandonware." It's best we don't link to those sites, no matter how old the games might be.

That is a leacher's site. He sells games he has linked to at abandonware sites.

Not that abandonware is legal. It isn't.
Regardless of how good a PC game may be it will always have its detractors and no matter how bad a PC game may be it will always have its fans.

Some sites are totally free.  Also if the games are in GOG, then it's better to get there since you're paying anyway.  Games would be compatible to modern computers already.

Abandonware is definitively not legal. Copyrighted works that have been abandoned by their creators do not automatically become public property. On the contrary, they remain protected for the duration of the copyright, which varies from country to country.
