Unless he has been avoiding high mountains in a country mostly composed of high mountains, I expect it isn't that much of a problem. Still, one of the (official) reasons Benedict retired was because his doctor told him no more flying. I can see a potential problem coming in that direction, too.

I'm pretty sure this is the same guy I was hoping would be elected pope last time (although I wasn't unhappy with Ratzinger. Any fan of Balthasar rates high in my book to begin with.) Does anyone know why he pleaded NOT to be elected pope last time?

The Swiss Guard can be pretty dangerous if the situation gets strange.
My dad was with a group of sailors on a USO trip to the Vatican in 1952.  Back then the pope had a big hall with a central aisle for him to be carried through.  On one side were the people from the Romance languages (Italy, France, Spain) and on the other for Germanic languages, which included english.  There were fences to keep the faithful back from the aisle.  In the recent past, people could get out of their seats and into the aisle, but the mob could get carried away.
After the blessing, his chair was carried to go between the two groups and there wer four Swiss Guards with halberds, escorting him at the corners.
Well, the fence keeping back the Italians held up very well, but the one for the stoic germans was apparently not so sturdy.  Whatever, american sailors of USS Kepler, accidently pushed a section down.
The chair bearers quickly reversed and took the pope away from the hooligans.
One of the Swiss led the chari back, but the other three immediately got into a triangle with a point man and the others on his sides.  They held their ground and looked menacing and prepared to use the halberds.  Although the weapons are for display and not sharp, the damage even a dull blade could do when swung with force on a six foot handle would be deathly.
My father told us that he could just see the courtmartial convened to find out why american sailors were the last recorded victims of Swiss halberds.
