It gets better: CORE 5.81 shuts the Matrix version down.

I boogied over to Matrix and got the instructions for 5.81 and August patch. I'll fool with this when I have a bunch of free time.

Will the GG add-ons work with the updated Matrix base game?

I'm 95% sure the answer is Yes   --   But if someone knows better, please say so!

Jarhead, what core engine were you running before updating?  5.80?

Do you have any mods installed?

I'm trying to run the core update on a fresh install.  Before I apply the cu file, my engine is running 5.75.  Is the cu incremental?

Yes, that's my question.  Do you have to update by increments?

I don't recall having to do so before, with the other game from them.  The core update should be all-inclusive but who knows.. maybe that's changed?

Jarhead0331

The cu file is not incremental.  You should be able to use it to patch from a clean install to the latest version of the core engine.  I got it to work.

The only thing I did different was to install directly to the c:\ and not the stupid program files (x86) folder.

When I run the Polygon update, it doesn't add anything to the update list.. is that the way it's supposed to be?

So now I have

the district update is the polygon update, my version number didn't change either, but you need to move it up the list to see in game eye candy changes. I have the district update first on my update list.

Really?!?

This is exactly the sort of thing that is pushing me to the edge of my patience with Graviteam.  You only ever find out important things like this 'by the way' -- nothing is ever explained clearly, and sometimes things just aren't explained at all.

That said --  What is the extra eye-candy the polygon / district update provides?  I moved the district update to the top of the list, and the only thing I noticed different was that my game suddenly lags a lot more on the same settings.  But I didn't notice anything different visually -- ??

-budd-

The polygon thing is all visual stuff. Better models, uniforms,  more detail basically. I notice because i play on a laptop with integrated graphics, but if you play with high settings you probably have to look hard. You can always disable it or move it down if it slows too much. i hear ya on the frustration part. Once you get the patching thing down that's no problem, but the explanation of new stuff leaves alot to be desired. I still not sure about the comm stuff and the AI control stuff and the auto arty stuff and it gets old hunting the forums for answers and the in game help is not deep enough. The game is so damn good though and well supported. There are just some great moments that happen is this game....Stuff happens and you just sit back and go.....that was fu**ing cool.

Hmmm...I moved the district update to the top of my list and I don't think I've seen any changes to the graphics.

No change in performance though as I have everything cranked right up except for the grass which is set to High. Ultrahigh grass causes good slowdowns on my PC.

This kind of stuff is why playing Russian-developed games can be such a pain in the ass.  You only hear about the commonly odd stuff, like this, in these Russian games third hand.  Not only is their UI (and maybe some game mechanics) rather odd, but there isn't a direct line to those in the know if you speak English.   :o

I'd be doubtful if having to install the gfx update to the top is a must, but ya never know since the update process is odd in the first place.

Tuna

hmmm.. ok, I already had the District Update and it was at 1.03, so like you said, it didn't change... Next time I have my Gaming PC setup, I'll try moving it to the top and see if I see a difference...

-budd-

I did find it strange that the version number didn't change, it did last time I belive. It seem to install fine, no sure way to tell I guess when the version doesn't change. Haven't seen any description of what the polygon update does. I'll what's listed when it goes up on GG, maybe the visual upgrade is in my head :o. I'll post over at there forum and ask.

@Wallysworld:  Could you give a brief run-down of your system's specs?  I'm in the market for a new rig and am wondering just what it takes to play this game on Very High settings.

@Budd:  thanks for all the explanations -- I am *amazed* that you can play this game with an integrated graphics card.  I have a gaming laptop with SLI gtx 285m's that starts to struggle on Medium-High settings.  (Granted it's over 3 years old now, so not 'top of the line,' but a powerful laptop nonetheless that has trouble with APOS's eye candy).
