Wargaming: Which monitor do you use?

I'ved used 24" and 27" and I have found that the '24 appears to be the optimal screen size (imo).  A lot has to do with how close you set to the machine, but in wargaming (CK2, EU3, DW, HOI3.....etc) I have found that having larger real-estate is not always a big benefit as it relates to gaming.  Because of how I set I do not have to looks as much in a FPS game either.

I've been using a 23" Acer G235H for about two and a half years on my Windows 7 PC and I'm quite pleased with it. The monitor on my Windows Vista machine was a 22" Acer AL2223W which I was also very satisfied with. Prior to it, I used a 19" CRT Samsung Syncmaster 9555 DF on my Windows XP machine. Of the three, I liked the display of the CRT monitor best. But the thing was huge and very heavy.

I'm about to pull the trigger on a Maingear desktop.  I bought the Asus 24" 144hz monitor for a pretty reasonable price on NewEgg to go with it.  I've heard great things about gaming on the 120/144 hz refresh and can't wait to see it for myself --

Hannspree 21". Eventually, after I move,  I'll hook up my old Sanyo projector again for flightsimming. Nothing like flying with a 120" screen ;D

The notable thing, here, is that it's a 16:10 widescreen ratio, which is an uncommon find anymore.  The latest ones all have 16:9 widescreen ratios (like an HDTV) so most of the new monitors don't have as much viewable vertical size.  While 16:9 is okay when watching HD movies, I don't think it fits as well into gaming and especially strategy gaming that involves maps because you have a lot more side-to-side view and not so much up-down room.   The reason most monitors are 16:9 anymore is simple:  it's cheaper to make the screens that way because they don't need separate lines to run the more computer game-friendly 16:10 ratio screens - they can just use their HDTV lines to make monitors interchangeably.  Unfortunate.  :-[

So, yeah, 16:10 is da bestest.   They also look to have a larger screen area compared to the similarly-sized wider ones, too, if only because it doesn't look so damn narrow in the vertical.


If someone is in the market for a new monitor, I suggest signing up for Newegg's newsletter because they usually have a few computer monitors on sale every other week, lately.

Vizio 37"

(I originally picked up an LG 39" to replace the Vizio 34" I donated to a cousin at college, but it was a little too big for my desktop and I decided I didn't much like the 3D conversion effects, so I returned it and went back to a 2D Vizio. Both are great TVs, though, especially for the cost.)
