RoF = Rise of Flight?
Regardless of how good a PC game may be it will always have its detractors and no matter how bad a PC game may be it will always have its fans.

Just the look of it is...intimidating.

Hmmm. Not good then. Its just that it looks so cool. maybe I'll go for the Pup then, or perhaps one the bigger ones - maybe I'll try the HP 0-400, or the Gotha.....or the SE5a. Not easy to choose.

It depends on what you want them for.  Generally I buy planes so that I'm not excluded from MP servers because I don't have them.  If you want to play MP then, out of those you list, I'd buy the SE, unless you want to master bombing (then pick HP or Gotha). If you just want to play offline, then Pup as the most fun

Felixstowe flying boat?

I broke down and got it soon after release. It's definitely in the BUFF class. It's a lot easier to take off from water with with the Felix than from dirt with the other 2 BUFFs though.

Bob, I do not recommend the DH2, I bought it because I liked the design and look, but in game.. you can't fight anything with it, very slow..

Gusington

DH2 sounds good for me then since I am only planning on getting shot down.

It's a lot of fun to make a quick mission where you've got a flight of DH2s against a flight of Fokker EIIIs.  Start off at 2,000m and you'll be amazed just how quickly you all end up on the deck once the turn fighting starts.  The DH2 takes forever to climb.

Felixstowe flying boat?

It flies like a flying boat.  My favorite plane is the Dolphin.  For irrational reasons I think.  Anyway, Tizard (of later radar fame)
personally delivered the first Dolphin to France.  By then he was pretty tired of flying and later remarked that
maybe an oxygen mask would have made him more enthusiastic about flying (the Dolphin could get up pretty high apparently).

Gusington

I like the Dolphin myself.

In the end, I did buy the D.H.2, only because I like it. However, I am having a problem with it insofar as it will not respond to throttle controls. My other aircraft work fine, and I've reset the inputs etc sever times, but nothing happens other than the aircraft stays at full throttle all the time.

Not sure if this is a bug in this particular plane or if you need to do something different for add-ons?

Anyone else have similar problems?

This could be the reason for your frustration- the DH2 was powered by a license build version of the Gnome Monosoupape Rotary engine. It had no throttle as such, just a 'blip' switch or, occasionally, a 3-cyl cutoff switch.

Extreme embarrassment.

I finally got round to looking in the RoF manual, and sure enough, just as you say, Stagger, there is a minute small-print line telling me that exact thing.

So back to fiddling with joystick setting - its a bit of a pig of a game in that respect due to the sheer number of default settings, so I'm still trying to find a rational set-up on the 'ol Saitek X45.

So yes, its a a sod to fly, but the main reason I brought it is because I like its looks, and I remember building a 1/48 plastic kit of one many moons ago.

I shall get myself either an SE5a or Dolphin for 'proper' flying :-)

I have the SE, but not the Dolphin, and the only thing I know about the latter is that it's prone to flipping over on landing and killing the pilot.  The SE is a good plane for the prudent pilot as you can stuff the nose down on full throttle to escape the bad guys.  It doesn't do well with sustained turns, so your best bet with it is to dive on an unsuspecting enemy, try to get a shot in, and then climb away (regardless of whether your shots hit) - the so-called boom 'n' zoom.   This tactic requires that you are able to spot aircraft flying beneath you, can position yourself in the dive so that you'll intercept that aircraft, and that you have the discipline not to get sucked into a turn fight.  In my experience none of these things is easy.

I often use the SE in MP because it's usually available and doesn't have the stigma of the Camel.  For a mediocre pilot like me, it's good because you can generally bug out when you cock things up, but it is hard to get kills in.

One other thing: it is tail heavy and requires constant forward-stick to maintain level flight.  This makes gunnery tricky because the stick is under tension in the "neutral" position, meaning that fine adjustments of pitch for aiming are difficult.  If you slide the pitch response curve down until the stick is centred when the plane is flying level at full throttle you'll find that trying to bring the sights to bear doesn't result in so much over-correction in pitch.

Silent Disapproval Robot

I have both.  The SE5 is probably the easier of the two to fly but accurate gunnery is more difficult because the site is very rudimentary and the configuration of a Vickers on the nose and a Lewis gun on the top wing is a bit unusual.

The Dolphin is good for gunnery but the low cockpit makes for poor visibility, especially if you don't have a Track IR.  It's also got those huge wings which give it good lift but also make it prone to structural failure.  You can't really yank on the stick in the Dolphin or the wings go bye-bye.

If you're looking for a good all around plane that doesn't really have any huge drawbacks, you'll have to join the bad guys and get an Pfalz DIII or an Albatross DV.
