I actually bought this a second time, because all I have is the old CD version with the activation code scribbled on the side of the paper sleeve. The price is cheap enough to justify a digital backup copy.

Picked the game up last night and spent almost 2 hours with it.  So graphic eye candy wise this game looks and feels like something out of the early '90s.  In fact when I turned the battle quality graphics to High I got some weird background flashing.  Turned down the battle graphics to normal and the flashing disappeared.  I'm getting 30FPS at this setting. 

That is probably the only negative criticism I'll give for this game.  There is something about this game that arouses the strategic thinker.  I have no clue about what to do but I find this game addicting.  How could such a visually simple looking game be so complex and twisted that it sucks you right in?  I'm loving it!  (I ended my first game due to 180 warriors showing up at my door laying siege  to my city.  I thought I had an impressive 25 unit army broken up into two squads and led by my god leader but everyone died when I tried to sortie out the gates.)

when i get chance to post the links i will - there are 2 must views. 1 is a guy on youtube - das somebody - he has 30 videos as a lets play from picking your god and why, thru tax,thru magic and into combat - its brilliant

and get your ass in an MP game - id join another newbie game - it doesnt matter what mistakes you make, everyones new, its not like someones going to come waltzing in with 'awesome power of doom' spells and humiliate everyone

I'm looking for some more basic information on how to play this game.  The links provided in this thread as well as the manual are all excellent.  They are full of very detailed information.  The manual even has a walkthrough for several scripted turns. 

This is all well and good however what I'm looking for is just some basic explanations of what all of the icons on the map and surrounding text boxes mean.  There is also nothing in the manual that explains what the little icons in a commander window mean.  Is there some sort of guide out there that just breaks down the different screens without a lot of wordy backstory and excess text that points me to another section to get more info?

These guides appear to be written for someone who has 10+ years experience playing the game as well as a PHD in Dominions 3.   :)

Dsa24680 is someone after my own heart--not only does he have videos of Dominions 3, but he also has videos of Fallen Enchantress, Distant Worlds, Age of Wonders and other games.

W8, I experienced exactly the same thing and it is frustrating.  Honestly the best advice I can give besides what Gameleaper and Greybriar already have is to dive into the single player.  Just create some random maps with plenty of opponents (so that you can see how the other nations work) and really experiment.  You got nothing to lose!

Most symbols in the game interface have an extra info window if you rt-click on a stat or symbol.  While they don't go into precise details, it will definitely prime you on what they do.

Blue-colored spells are Nation-specific ones.  Most nations have a few of their own unique ones.
