Words are failing me ATM.

While I disapprove of the voting laws, this is over-the-top.

It's politics. The one commentator is right in that this is a publicity stunt by the NAACP, meant to embarrass lawmakers in states trying to pass these voting laws. That's kind of the point. And yes, there are some... interesting... groups on that committee. I'm sure some of them would dearly love to stick it to us. But since when do we fear that?

It's bad form, going "outside the family" as it were, but I get it. Like anything like this, there is an opportunity here. It'll be squandered though, through a combination of mock outrage, vitriol, and arrogance. We bill ourselves as the standard bearer for truth, justice, and democracy in the world. Why in the world would we be scared of scrutiny, or consider ourselves above it?

What's the worst that the UN can do? Pass a non-binding resolution that will end up getting Fox News' knickers in a twist? They don't have the power or authority to actually do anything.

No, there's nothing they can do.

A deft Secretary of State might turn the tables and point out - correctly - that several UN members could afford to clean up their own acts before passing judgment.

Anyone taking bets on whether that will happen here?

 I see no reason for the UN to exist if it does not address its own hypocricy. IMO, all the Western world and democratic nations with emerging economies should pull out of the UN and create their own body.. ..   e.g., "United Democratic Nations of Terra". I'd give the old UN less than a year before it implodes from its own corruption.

If certain members of the Human Rights Council were make any criticisms of us, it would definitely be a case of "pot, meet kettle"...

That would likely depend on exactly how much initiative Hillary would be allowed to take.  I think she herself is smart and adept enough that she could pull it off, but the question is how tightly Obama holds onto her reins in this type of situation.
