Hi!  My name is Scott...and I've been addicted to Team Fortress 2 for the past week.... ;D

I know, I know...I am late to the party.  But man, am I ever addicted to this game!

I mean, I have already made three micro-transaction this week alone.  Now, I know that doesn't sound like a lot - and it isn't, only $7.50 - but that is $7.50 more than I made for any other F2P game!   :D

I am somewhat surprised by my reaction to this game.  When I first tried it back in 2010 - when it went F2P - I lasted a bare 45 minutes on my HDD according to Steam. I just didn't care for it because of its cartoony presentation. But now I am getting a real kick out of its artistic direction. And like with Borderlands, I love the loot drops, something I didn't appreciate back on 2010. And it certainly has a dedicated community, so there is no need to worry about finding a game (wow, never thought the CoD community would take second fiddle to another FPS). Finally, being a PC exclusive (well, now Mac and Linux), this game just shines from all the PC-only development features.

I am also coming to love the humor to this game:

Maybe that is why I am so in love with this game.  After playing such grim and serious shooters like BlOp2 and BF3, it is nice just to have some fun with a shooter.  Not having to worry about realistic ballistics, or flame wars from overly serious players, or friendly fire, and so on, is a breath of fresh air.  It is nice to just be able to kick back and laugh a little at the onscreen antics of the players.

Anybody else play TF2?

If you don't...don't start now!  Because you won't be able to stop!  Like I wrote above, three micro-transactions in...and I know that I will be making more real soon (just added $10 to my Steam wallet.  Ack!).  That scares me.  Never been so glad to part with my money.  <shudder>

Be afraid.  Be VERY afraid!   ;)

The amount of real world collectibles around this game is pretty amazing.  Comes close to some of the WoW collectibles.

I was on a massive TF2 binge last summer.

Nefaro

Maybe I'll give it a shot, too.  Just please tell me the bunny-hopping isn't crazy.

LongBlade

TF2 is an over-the-top hyperactive FPS. You won't mind the bunny hopping because you'll be too busy being fragged.

I was on a TF2 craze about a couple of years ago. Probably time to give it another go. There's a lot of great fun to be had with it.

Meh.  Not into the "hyper" shooters so I'll give it a pass.

Good move. TF2 is hyper hyper. There's a certain zen to it, but it isn't for everyone.

since i reinstalled steam after an almost 5 years hiatus i been thinking about trying this again. I played many hours of the original, and the first thing i did was install the old one and see if anyone was still around. Few servers and alot of bots. The first time i played the new one there was alot of everybody doing there own thing so in didn't stick with it long. I did hate the Bh'ing and gliding of the old one. I may just install it this weekend and see what's what. Hope there are some servers where teamwork is king, because the teamwork is what make it enjoyable. I'm almost always play an engineer[ hope the emp's are still around], any good server recommendations? I'll have to look up if the scripting and binding are still available in TF2. Maybe i'll see ya in the fort, i'll be some version of the name budd...i always am.

I would recommend giving it a try anyway since it is F2P.  While the game isn't a tactical shooter in the vein of Ro2 or even BF3, it also isn't as hyper as a Call of Duty where everything depends on fast reflexes.   For example, your loadout is vital in your performance.  There are so many different combinations of weaponry and gear that affect your play. I think that is one of the things I am finding so attractive about this game.  Plus, you have nine - 9! - classes to chose from, each having its own (wacky) strengths and weaknesses, along with eight gameplay modes (seven MP and one Man vs Machine Co-Op), two things that keeps the gameplay fresh.

I think the biggest potential turn-off for people when it comes to TF2 is the cartoon-like characters and weaponry.  That is what initially kept me away.  But after spending years serving on the grim front lines of other shooters, I am finding the Looney Tunes approach of this game to be a very welcome breath of fresh air.  It is nice to laugh in a shooter for a change.

Again, if you are on the fence, I would say give it a try as it is F2P and there is nothing to lose.  Just go in realizing that this is a game where you are as likely to get hit in the face with a skillet as you are to be gunned down by a sniper.   :D  But you'll find yourself laughing the whole time....

PS: I also recommend watching those "meet the X" vids as they really do an excellent job of giving you an idea of how the classes work and the resultant gameplay.  BTW: here are two that compilation from above missed:

Been having some fun working with the movie editor.  Last night, I found myself on a server that saves replays, so I was able to stitch together the following.  The first part is me playing as a demoman.  This one was a bit challenging because I had recently received "Ali Baba's Wee Booties" which confer +25 health and improved motion control.  Unfortunately, I had to equip it in my primary slot, which means I lost my Loch-N-Load which I relied on for close encounters.  This meant that I now needed to rely upon my melee weapon: the 'Scotsman's Skullcutter".   :D  So, as you can see in the vid, I ran around a lot with my Skullcutter out...and even managed a few kills (I feel sorry for that guy I cornered and hacked down!).  My demoman looks particularly fashionable in his "Genuine K-9 Mane".  :)

The second part is me foolin' around with the toughest class: the spy.  Ugh!  So tough.  But after a bunch of deaths, I think I am starting to get the hang of it.  I recently acquired a "L'Etranger" pistol, which has a +15 cloak, but a -20% damage.  Still, killed a few with it in that round.  And I almost won the game!  Darn that sniper who took me out at the very last second.   >:(  My fault, I should have been dancing around a bit more.  I just didn't see anyone in sight of me and got overconfident.

Anyway, the vid:
