Pretty amazing.  It manages to not only capture the magic of all of what the developers of KSP have accomplished, but also the wondrous achievements of mankind in space, as well.

I'm interested in getting this but am unsure as to what the goal is. Do you have a research tree? Is it just sandbox where you do whatever you want?

I have only played sandbox. However, it appears to have components for a campaign. Availability of parts and costs are listed on all the items. Those may even work now but I haven't played around with them.

Believe it or not, the goal is to actually succeed. That trailer was making me feel pretty bad until they started showing clips of the crashes and burns.

It is truly difficult to explain the adrenalin rush as you watch your first successful launch. I kept waiting for it to fall apart. But as it climbed higher I started to realize I might actually succeed in getting the rocket into space. Then...I had to wait and see if they'd make it back! It was awesome.

yes, but the game is still a work in progress so I expect things to change.
