Weekend-the Work edition

Friday nite I got my ass handed to me playing Axis & Allies Pacific. I was playing US/China. I lost three carriers loaded with 2 fighters each in a single kamikaze attack, using all of the Japanese allotment of kamikaze attacks for the the entire game in one shot. There was no coming back from that result though.

More boardgaming in the works for Saturday night. I'm pulling for either FAB The Bulge or No Retreat. A couple of GMT games.

Having a great time in pbem cmbn cmsf and dom3 - all the games have my full attention, I keep meaning to finally blast into a shogun II campaign but never get the chance - I'm shortly cutting back on MP games so should get the chance soon

I've decided to play the Civ 5 Game of the Month TSG58: Austria on emperor going for a culture victory. Always fun to compare scores and strategies, though this is a little over my head, king being my current standard.

Detroit's a nasty opponent. They have a pretty impressive rotation and a downright absurd batting order.

I think I've finally decided on the Braves for myself...unless I take a go as the Rangers...

No kidding.  I'm in the second season playing the home team (Royals) and those bastids are in my division, so I see the Lions all the time.  It wasn't a complete trouncing over the course of the first season, but it's getting worse in the second.  >:(

I'm working half a day in San Antonio today and then driving back home to (North) Austin.  I bought a new wargaming table.  I had plans made on a "cat proof" table with a retractable lid when I stumbled upon this table at a local Goodwill.  It has a removable lid in three pieces (center and two larger ends) and it's recessed about 3" I'd say on the inside.  The lid that removes is a lightweight wood with a nice finish.  Not pine.  Birch maybe?  I'll post pictures later.  I need to modify it just a bit however, it's about 1" too narrow to house all of the map for AH Third Reich so I'm going to take the risk of cutting the table down the center and adding an extension of about 6".  I can then replace the center lid portion with one that is also 6" wider.  Shouldn't be difficult.

Also plan on playing some more Blood Bowl (tabletop).  I found a like new 3rd Edition game for $50 at Half Price Books in Austin.  I'm not much into fantasy gaming (WH40K and the like) but for some reason football with death and mayhem always intrigued me (in this game that is) and plus I knew that Blood Bowl was a rare game so went for it.  We have been having a blast with it!  I suppose next I'll get the paints, et. al and start actually painting the cheap little mini's that came with it. 

Also playtesting and wargame graphics on the must-do list for the weekend, so I have a fairly busy one planned.

I need a break from killing things with magic-AOW Shadow Magic, and from 500+ meters away in CMBN. So it's back to Skyrim for me, to stick a blade into something up close. Of course if I had an 88mm Exquisite Bow--- that'd do too.

I started playing Red Orchestra 2 -- just against the bots so far, but I'm already remapping keys so it looks like I'll be
shooting the Gefrieter unter dem Refuerhergeratormachinen zoon.  This will be a catastrophic waste of time, but maybe I'll do so
poorly that my derranged late-night laughter will not be waking the neighbors too much.

Really, my only hope is that the German players have improved since Red Orchestra Original Flavor and that they shoot me often
enough to put a quick end to this silliness....but a little spectating on the servers seems to reveal they are still mostly the immobile, unimaginative snipers they always were.  The mindless run-and-gun crowd and I will be swarming over them soon or zoon or both.

Got online since the players are little easier to work against than the bots (the bots are suicidal -- generally the players are more circumspect).

I was pretty dismal for the first few minutes on most maps, but I did find just the kind of Gefrieter that can be such fun to shoot -- only the best Gefrieters seem to be
the O Gefrieters -- there was one called {LS}OGefreter Klaus Morgenstern* -- yes !  Presumably the LS and the Asterisk mean something in the
secret language of Gefrieters.  He got me once or twice and I never got him, but what a fine target!

I've discovered that ARMA 2 has helicopters you can fly, so I'll be screwing around with it using Planned Assault.

I'm also thinking of modding up Skyrim and continuing on my second playthrough.

I was disappointed in my desire to shoot heaps of Gefriters.  Indeed, I did quite badly on most of my excursions online.  But why:

1) the game has improved and my run-and-gun stuff doesn't work?
2) my memory is faulty and I only did well on certain maps?
3) I'm out of practice?
4) the bots are smarter?
5) the gefrieters are smarter?
6) I don't know the maps?

Anyway, not doing well on my first excursions is probably the best outcome since it means I will keep playing, but not too much and in any case RO2 is a better game than RO original and the Rising Storm thing should be a lot of fun.

Spent the entire weekend playing Landscape Tycoon... moved 7 cu. yds. of dirt, dug out 2 new flower gardens, moved 96 3 lbs decorative stones, opened pool for the summer.
