The remake was dreadful. Don't waste your time.

It wasn't quite "dreadful", imho; rather I would describe it as "lacking" and, at times, annoying. That being said, I've watched it about 4 times! Mostly late at night. There's a stoner scene that I rather enjoy.

Nice trip down memory lane Bison. I can't believe how cheesy those special effects were. At the time as a youngster I was always impressed with that show.

The Altrusians, including Enik (in the original show -- I don't care to relate what happened in the wretched movie), were the people who designed the Land of the Lost; but their civilization was destroyed by what amounted to the portals running amok (somewhat similar to the overarching plot of Primeval). The story of the series takes place far in Enik's future, and he's horrified at how his people have fallen into barbarism.

"Sleestak" isn't their own name for themselves in any case, but a name coined as a bit of a grim joke by prior humans caught by one of the portals and dumped into the Land: someone thought they looked like a guy he knew named John Sleestak (or some name like that), so that's what he called them! Those were also the source of the chalk writing "Beware the Sleestak" found by the Marshal family soon after arriving in the Land. Late in the run of the show the Marshals found the diary of the prior group and tried following it to an exit point, thus tying up several loose plot threads.

If the show's episodes are watched in order, aside from the final ep of the first season (which should be ported to the finale of the second season), it's a nice bit of surprisingly hard science fiction that ties up cleanly with a respectable finale. (The third season should be avoided.) I rewatched the whole thing through last year, and was very pleased at how well it held up, given the obvious budget restrictions! The Marshals steadily develop their ability to relate to their new environment, and someone went to the trouble of creating a whole new legitimate language for the protohuman family trapped in the Land with them: the Marshals slowly learn the language and effectively teach it by immersion to the audience, while Chaka slowly learns English. As a general rule, new knowledge learned one week would continue to be used and improved on in following eps.

A movie adaptation could have been epic with strong trilogy potential. But it was mostly treated as an extended crass joke. >:(
