How did I not hear about this?! Wizardry 8 was one of the best RPGs of that era! The graphics are rough by modern standards, but the gameplay is still top-notch.  I also loved the intentionally cheesy voiceovers!

Just this week.

They also have Wizardry 6 and 7 now.

This was an excellent rpg but not at all an easy one....it was extremely challenging even on the easy setting.  Once you left the starting dungeon and hit the road you would often run into extremely powerful hoards of enemies who would crush your party.  Yet other times you wouldn't run into these invincible hoards....it was luck of the draw. That said, it is one of the best from that era, I suspect I'll end up getting it just to experience it again.

Yes I remember always getting slaughtered by this guy in the first city I came across.
It has always prevented me from playing any further.
A friend of mine, who was a total addict, showed me one of the legendary items of the game once; The Cane of Corpus. Awesome staff!!

I've played it for an hour or so today already :P

Yes, the difficulty is punishing. You really have to grind a bit to level up and make sure you do well in later levels. I remember this treetop village place, with all sorts of hostile tree-people, that was just plain insane. I went back, did some more leveling, and made it through alright. Part of the problem was that Wiz 8 did not do a good job of telling you what to do and when. If you tried to do the main quest line too early, without doing a few side quests, then you were toast. It really does reward the completionist player.

Sir Slash

I saw it on there yesterday. Looks a lot like an earlier version of Skyrim. How would you compare the two?

Very hard to make a comparison at all, they are two entirely different types of rpg.  Wiz is party based (6 or 8, I don't remember) with turn based combat, very retro-old school in design and play. Nothing like Skyrim.

They also have Wiz 6 and 7 together, and with it you get Wiz 6/7 Gold....never played these....worth the time and effort?

I played Wizardry 7 (I think) and the only thing that really bugged me was that combat against large numbers of enemies took forever.

Did Wizardry 8 fix this problem?  Because other than that issue I really liked Wiz7.

There are enough FAQs out there that the complexity issue should be manageable now.

They added a combat speed slider, in the Wiz8 settings.  But IIRC, even at the highest setting it can still take awhile in big battles.  I suppose that was due to the computing power limitations back in 2001 or so.

Fortunately, there was an animation speed hack out that would speed up the monster movement during the turn-based combat.  I recall using it awhile back and it worked like a champ.  ;D  It's probably still hosted somewhere in these internets.  It pretty much jacks up the animation speed even further than the slider does in the settings.

Dayum!  GOG has been kicking out a steady stream of excellent oldies lately.
