No one likes bad experiences especially from foreign troops in garrison. Like has been suggested, it's probably a few bad apples, but you're going to get some with over 20,000 young men on a small island. Like JH says, this isn't going to resonate much, but at least as an organisation the USMC recognise the problem and are trying (even if this isn't the best way to go) to do something to deal with it.

Like Puss says, the locals won't want the PLA on their doorstep anymore than anyone else, but I don't suppose the US want Hawaii to be the alternative frontline in any showdown with China/Korea, especially since from the US perspective Okinawa suits that purpose better. Maybe bromide in the coffee is the answer.... :o ;)

The USMC should just leave. The minute the locals forget and fail to appreciate the USMC presence is when you withdraw. Have a great time when the PLA turns up on your doorstep and memories of Nanjing surface.

Saw that article today, it was interesting. Looks like the Japanese and Chinese are coming full circle after 100+ years. The Japanese originally clawed their way to the top after the Sino Japanese War (1895) and now the Chinese are trying to do the same. I would rather not get in the middle.

I would not.  if its being used we are in a serious war with someone a bit further east.  its not that Im worried about the outcome, its more what that 2 weeks is going to cause.
