I'm willing to go on record as saying that sexual orientation by it self would not determine how effective and lethal (or productive, if you prefer) a combatant any particular Marine (or any other soldier, sailor, or airman) is. The social engineering applied by peers and authority figures to one's sense of self  based on their own notions of sexual orientation can, however, make a profound impact.
Here's a hypothetical question for all of you:

Who would make a better soldier (regardless of other personality traits): A lesbian or a homosexual male? Who would likely be more effective in combat? Who would be more effective in an administrative hierarchical structure? Why?

The irony isn't really lost on me.  I just felt like stirring the pot.

My sense is that, on average, a straight male will likely make a better killing machine than a lesbian female.  More carrying capacity, better able to transport a wounded comrade, probably stronger in physical combat, etc. 

I'd rather we just come up with some objective standards for what represents a reasonable standard of lethality and let whoever passes the test kill people for our country.

In terms of who might be more effective in the administrative hierarchical structure, I think the answer is, "It depends.  But I'd still rather we come up with objective standards of performance within that administrative hierarchy and judge people from there."

I didn't really mean to hijack the whole thread.  I was just trying to see if I couldn't get a rise out of some folks around the recent repeal of the Defense of Marines Act...

Same here.  I don't really care if a soldier is male or female, just so long as they can do the job.
