QuoteBack in the 1500s three guys were sitting around a campfire. One looked up and said, "We need to name this great land. Do either one of you have any ideas?"

After about an hour of hashing it over, nobody could think of what to name this new land. Finally, one of the guys had an idea. He said, "Lets put all of the letters of the alphabet in a hat and draw letters. We will name the country that way."

Because they could not think of a name, the other two agreed that this would be a good idea.

All the letters of the alphabet were put into one of their hats.

The first guy reached in and picked a letter and said "C eh".

The second reached in and drew a letter. "N eh".

The third reached in and drew his letter, "D eh".

Hence the name "Canada"

Sadly, in Newfoundland and Labrador Canada Day is also Memorial Day, an official day of mourning observed to remember the province's war dead.

Happy Birthday to Americas hat!
Jarhead - Yeah. You're probably right.

I'll take three A's, an N, and a D, but not a C.

In any case Happy Canada Day!!

Went and checked out the parade with the nieces and nephew...a bizarre number of the floats were church related. Regardless, the kids performed well in the street-side impromptu mosh pits known as 'people on that float are throwing candy'...a bizarre number of which were caused by the church related floats. The other floats just had people walking alongside who handed out candy bags to kids. Then we went to the old grain elevator where the kids went on pony rides, everyone ate ice cream and cotton candy and we looked at reptiles and spiders. Nothing says Canada like wearing a 50 pound python for photo ops and looking at bird eating arachnids...

Tonight, the grill shall be loaded down with meats. My sister is making a Canadian flag cheesecake. The beer is already flowing. A selection of various Big Rock labels, and some Sam Adams...to...uhhh...commemorate the War of 1812...or something? Whatever. It's hot out. I need more beer.

Then we'll head over to the Rec Center parking lot, where we will laugh at the 'remember when they were famous?' concert double shot of Glass Tiger and 54-40 (non-Canadians likely have never heard of either), then watch fireworks blow up the damn sky.
