Wierd. How can "crude oil" explode? I could understand gasoline or diesel exploding, high vapor pressure, but crude? It should catch fire not explode as soon as there is a collision.

Yeah... something weird there. Crude will not 'Explode". Must have been other volatiles on other cars.

Lac Megantic is only a couple hours drive from where I grew up - pretty little town that I have gone through by train a number of times back when there was decent passenger rail service in Canada. It is terrible to see the devastation. Death toll is currently 5 but still 40 people missing. The rail cars were carrying light crude which is flammable and vapors will cause an explosion. The area is now considered a crime scene by the QPP.

The photos are horrific. It's tragic. I've never been to Lac Meganitc, but the Province of Quebec is dotted with beautiful little towns that you just know are close knit. I did have the opportunity to spend a week in St. Georges about 10 years ago. The people I stayed with, and those I met while there, were all wonderful. My heart, thoughts and prayers go out to the people of Lac Megantic.

So the main "explosive" vapour is hydrogen sulfide gas it looks like. Benzene as well but very low concentrations.

The explosive force is still too great to be from those light crude carrying cars. I am betting that there was either propane or natural gas in the equation.
My doctor wrote me a prescription for daily sex.

My wife insists that it says dyslexia but what does she know.

Up to 13 confirmed dead, with lots still missing.  Apparently they think that most, if not all of the missing, are actually dead.  :(

I doubt that remains will ever be found for many of the missing, which will make it even harder for loved ones to cope with their loss.
