Civ5 = Civ4 Lite

I have been playing Civ 5 Ultimate for two days now and I must say that I am underwhelmed. My overall impression is "Civ4 Lite" or Civ Revolution ported from Xbox to the PC. The game is much streamlined from Civ4, with less information available (or necessary) and a lot fewer decisions to make. Several of the changes made to get there are elegant simplifications and arguable improvements. Overall, it just has a lot less "meat". Now, this does not make it a poor Game. As a matter of fact it may be a better multi-player game. But as far as a deep, long trek upwards through time, so far it just does not do it for me the way Civ4+Expansions does. The interface has some rough spots, like purchasing a building (ex: you push the "purchase" button, only it doesn't). I'll work at it a bit more and try some mods. So far, it feels like a game I'd play for a bit while taking a break from something more intense.

That's part of the problem. You are comparing vanilla CiV with Civ IV + expansions.
Civ IV, when it first came out, felt very hallow compared to Civ III + expansions.

With the latest expansion it's a very full deep game through out the entire game.

^Ditto that. As someone who has played every single Civ and expansion, dating back to the original, Civ V was my least favorite until a few patches and the G&K DLC. Now it's my favorite Civ of all time with over 600 hours played so far.

Faster to finish a campaign, no stacks of doom, still a fair amount of thinking and strategizing.

Guys, I am playing Civ V Ultimate, which  has all of the expansions/DLC except this last one, which came out last week. So you are saying that BNW makes all the difference? Hard to believe...

Steelgrave, yeah, I am coming to that conclusion. But, the experiment is not over yet. I'll keep playing and try BNW when it goes on sale. My son loves Civ5. Maybe some different set-up will get me a better game.

^ Yskonyn the only way that statement is fair is if the OP started other posts stating the same thing.

He may not be aware (as I am not) that other threads are out there covering the subject...Civ V has been out for a loooong time now - he's only played it for two hours which makes me think he's only just picked it up. So he's only posting his own personal "new" impressions of this "new" game...as lots of other people do when they pick up an older title and play it for the first time.

Personally I love Civ V and - like ALL games I love - I avoid them. By that I mean I love so many games I don't get to put the hours in I should be able to.

I'd say give it a lot more time. When I started playing Civ5 when it first came out I kept thinking 'this might be the first time I go back to playing a previous version of Civ'. I never did. My only complaint is the more warlike feel of Civ5. But that seems to be changed in Brave New World. And yes, Brave New World does change the game quite a bit, at least in my opinion.  :P
