A Medal of Honor awarded to a Civil War general has been returned to a Maine town after it was found inside a book at a church fundraising sale.

The Times Record of Brunswick, Maine reports Civil War Gen. Joshua Chamberlain's original Medal of Honor has been verified as authentic after it was sent anonymously in July to the Pejepscot Historical Society in Brunswick.

It is crazy that it is Chamberlin's.  But Medal of Honors were handed out like candy during he war between the States.  If you look at the list of recipients, the numbers were cut way back and the standards were much higher by WW1.

This is not to say that Chamberlin did not deserve the medal.  But it is amazing to visit State Capitals in the North and see the plaques bragging about Medal of Honor winners from the State - and how there are almost none after 1900.
