eh?

I never knew about that.

Done. Hopefully that's the answer! Thanks.

I never really bothered looking it up (FSX crashing) because it always seemed so random.

Something that's been confusing me of late....I always played with Progressive Taxi on to show me where to go...I have no idea about airports or taxi ways despite reading about them.

Now I know that runway 27 is a heading of 270. I've just been told to taxi to and hold short of runway 27. I zoomed out to look at the runway and saw that it was to the back right of my aircraft (runaway end had a big "& on it). However putting on Progressive Taxi to check, and it's having me head to 09.

So when it says taxi to and hold short Runway 27, it DOES mean go to the edge of the runway that says 27 doesn't it?

And what does "Maintain 1,800 until established"...what does it mean by "until established"...bearing in mind I'm not using ILS. Am I "established" when I hit the "cone" coming out of the assigned runway?

Ok, two questions here.

When Ground tells you to taxi to 27, then you should be at the end of the runway with 27 on it, so that you're taking of heading 270'ish (rounded).  If progressive took you to 09, then FSX glitched, the winds changed and they didn't tell you, or maybe the runway was being used as a taxiway....called a "back taxi" when you taxi down the runway to the other end for takeoff.  Depending on the field, especially if it's a really small field, that is possible.  I've done it before in a P-3.

For your second question, "until established" means "until established on the glideslope".  If you're on ILS then that's obvious.  If you're shooting a non-precision approach like a VOR, then you stay at that height until you're on the part of the approach that allows you to descend to your decision height (it's called something else on a non-precision approach but I can't remember what right now).  With a VOR there will usually be a DME associated with the height at which you can descend to the minimum altitude for the approach.

If you're shooting a visual then just stay there until you pick up the VASI lights and then get on the visual glideslope.

Make sense?

I was trying to fly into some crappy weather tonight.  I've been using the "real weather" default on FSX the last few weeks and it never seemed to be bad weather.  So tonight I deliberately flew into some bad weather on Delta's weather center, and still the weather was nice!  Finally I googled it and it turns out that the FSX/Jeppeson thing isn't working anymore, which is why the weather was always defaulting to clear.

I searched some more and then finally bit the bullet and bought Active Sky 2012.  It was between that and REX and Active Sky got the nod simply because it seemed easier to download and install.  I just did my first flight, Mexico City into Acapulco, which looked really bad on the live weather radar Active Sky uses.  Sure enough, flying into there was pretty sketchy.  I broke out pretty high, maybe 1,500 feet and 4 miles vis, but there were thunderstorms on station and it was a mess!  Really nice effects.  Without anything besides FSX default to compare it to, I'm quite happy so far.

Nice to finally have live weather updating again.

Thank you.

Both make sense and in particular the taxi-ing...they actually told me to take off runway 27 taxi runway X - so it was telling me to taxi down the runway - hence why progressive showed going to 09 (I think it was)

Thx

Dude, enough with the Cessna.  It's time to graduate to big boy planes!   ;D

I don't mean to derail but is there a source for high fidelity Soviet airliners?  Ive been reading a lot about Tupolev and it'd be fun to play the commie airline pilot for a bit.

There is a wonderfully made Sukhoi Superjet for XPlane 10 but that's a modern one with avionics similar to airbus.

Freeware Russian jets for FSX here.

New rig = SUPERB quality in this game...but it does seem to crash pretty bloody often.

Did you slap in the uiautomationcore.dll?

Thanks, this seemed to fix my crashes...

Also had my first successful ILS landing of the L-1101 tonight.. so psyched!!.. lol.. I"ve landed by hand quite a few times.. always ugly.. lots of crashes..

Man, I have a real problem.  I am totally addicted to this right now.  I keep wanting to buy more add-ons.

I am pretty sure FSX is now my most expensive entertainment software, between the base game and all the crap I've added to it since you guys started this thread.

Anyway, I was about to buy the ERJ combo pack from FeelThere but then decided to spend some time with the CLS MD-81 package I picked up on Friday.  I got into the pattern at Kalaeloa which is right down the street from my house and did touch and go's for a while.  I'm starting to get the feel for the jet.  You really have to stay ahead of it; it's not nearly as forgiving as the 737 is.

I do want to get to jets, and when I'm not flying Air Hauler, those are the babies I take up...but I choose Career difficulty in Air Hauler - meaning I can't graduate to jets until I get proficient (enough rep...which is quite a way away) and enough money (also quite a way away!)
