The guy who produced the film was actually a French Army cameraman and was present during the real battle. He was captured and spent several years in as a prisoner of the Viet Minh.

There is a quite well known book on the subject, by Bernard Fall, called 'Hell in a Very Small Place'

I had guessed Dien Bien Phu based on the funny pants some were wearing but I've never seen any movies about it.

In 'Go Tell the Spartans' one of the characters berates some of the other soldiers for wearing 'Frenchified' fatigues
instead of the ones that were standard issue. The story was supposed to take place in 1965 or so and the French
were perceived by the US officers as being not martial enough and sloppy thus losing Indochina to the 'Natives'.

Back in the 'Old Country Forums' there was an odd duck who was continually beating everyone over the head with his (or her)
superior understanding of the wars in Southeast Asia. It was one of the things that made that place a little more colorful at the time.
