SoHo is a neighborhood in Lower Manhattan, New York City, notable for being the location of many artists' lofts and art galleries, and for the wide variety of stores and shops ranging from trendy boutiques to outlets of upscale national and international chain stores. The area's history is an archetypal example of inner-city regeneration and gentrification, encompassing socio-economic, cultural, political and architectural developments.[2]

Almost all of SoHo is included in the SoHo-Cast Iron Historic District, which was designated by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1973, extended in 2010, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and declared a National Historic Landmark in 1978.[3] It consists of 26 blocks and approximately 500 buildings,[4] many of them incorporating cast iron architectural elements. The side streets in the district are notable for being paved with Belgian blocks.

The name "SoHo" refers to the area being "SOuth of HOuston (Street)", and was also a reference to the London district of Soho. It was coined by Chester Rapkin,[5] an urban planner who was the author of the "South Houston Industrial Area" study,[6] also known as the "Rapkin Report". This began a naming convention which has become a model for the names of new, emerging and re-purposed neighborhoods in New York such as TriBeCa for "TRIangle BElow CAnal Street", NoHo ("NOrth of HOuston Street"), DUMBO ("Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass"), Nolita ("NOrth of Little ITAly") and NoMad ("NOrth of MADison Square"), among others.

Soho is an area of the City of Westminster and part of the West End of London. Long established as an entertainment district, for much of the 20th century Soho had a reputation for sex shops as well as night life and film industry. Since the early 1980s, the area has undergone considerable transformation. It now is predominantly a fashionable district of upmarket restaurants and media offices, with only a small remnant of sex industry venues.

I would say yours sounds cosmopolitan and trendy - ours is porn cinemas, porn shops and sex shops, but its across the road from Chinatown - theres no finer place to stand on a Saturday night than the meeting of the two zones where you can see dildos and fake vaginas hanging in the window and across the road is 500 bright red Crispy ducks hanging in their window

Soho in London is quite the locale. I do some apartment rental description writing for a rental organization's properties in London. Recently I had to figure out how to write one up that was literally next door to, on one side, a nude bar and on the other side, a gay bar.

Not that there's anything necessarily wrong with that. And, ideally, anyone wanting to stay in Soho London is likely already aware of the bawdy characteristics of that fabulous neighborhood.

I really, really hope to visit London someday - I've become quite familiar with central London through these articles. :)
