Gaming what happened to you?

When I get burned-out on gaming, I often go to youtube and watch some one else's Let Play video of almost any game I have. Sometimes I learn new tactics or a trick I didn't know about or else watch the poor fool make an ass of himself trying to look good, and I can't wait to get back to my games. ;D

I find reading helped to re-energize me a lot, honestly.  There are a lot of great books out there.

This is where I'm at now also.
I haven't played a game on the PC for 2 weeks now.
Decided to start reading all the American Civil War books I purchased 4 years ago but never got around to reading and give gaming a break for awhile.

Now that the weather in Florida is cooling off,I can go outside more often without having to deal with the uncomfortable humidity and do some reading on the porch.

I figure I'll read for a month or so and get back into gamming again during the Holidays.
Then again maybe not.I'm actually rather enjoying the reading and outdoors right now for a change. :D 8)

What worked for me was to stop impulse buying on Gog, Steam and Gamersgate, all those $4.99 games that entertain for an hour then get deleted and forgotten, and to commit fully to learning and enjoying complicated, tough ones that I always wanted to master but never did. For me that was Ageod's ACW2...I could never wrap my head around Ageod games then I realized it was because I never put the time in to really learn them.  I've done this with ACW2 and it worked. It's been a very enjoyable experience and very rewarding to see how these games play out when I put the time and effort into them.

I like to paint minis and play boardgames to balance out the PC gaming, like GJK said.

Several years back I hit an RTS rut. Nothing was fun in that genre. So I quit playing them for a while. Try something you haven't done before.

And there is nothing wrong with getting your head out of the house once in a while. Gardening is great. There's nothing like making your own food.

Or try brewing your own beer. That's a blast, too.

just for the record: i don't grow anything to eat. Its just for to enjoy the display over the changing seasons ...and my zen-moments (and i do like to photograph)




(i do 'New German Style' gardening -as leading Brits landscapers call the new trend today - but without ever knowing i did so. It must have come naturally to me;-)  ...use of perennial plants, no room between plants, plants that grow naturally on that soil without to much work, a overgrown farmers garden appeal)

but i have a 'prodcution'-project for next year. I will grow my own tobacco! :)
(until tobacco gets outlawed in the EU completely, lol ;-) ...my granddad did it at that place here,  i got told ... so it should work. I already have the seeds here)

Also its nothing wrong with just 'collecting' games of your favorite series, and playing them later.
I collect Close Combat, Combat Mission 2 titles, Command Ops as it seams... 
Wargaming is a seasonal thing for me - a bad cold foggy weather activity.   

And i helps if you just play a scenario and finish it and not start the grand campaign and play only two or three opening battles...

Also i experienced that the release of a patch/update after some longer time (usually months) had passed after the release, had steered back the interest in a certain game-title, that i may had put aside because something (AI, pathfinding, graphic glitches, ect. ) had bugged me ... and i like to find out if 'my issue with not really enjoying it' had been solved.

That's a great pic Mike. I'm excited right now because like Dolan says, it's a little cooler here in Fla. and I've got a male and female Ruby-Throated Hummingbird coming by my feeder during the day. God. I'm starting to sound OLD aren't I?

with the current state of my gaming, i could as well quit it. even though i still read gaming blogs and aar's i have a hard time to really get into a game these days. i bought civ 5 and even though civ 1 was my last game it felt old from the start and i only managed to play two complete games. then i bought Total War Empires after Shogun 1 and i haven't finished the tutorial yet. i invested a half day as austria and took over poland, feeling like the ai would let me expand quite inopposed so far. then i bought Battle of the Bulge on ios and what a great polished game it is! but after my first axis victory i never returned again.

i buy games now and then but i hardly put in a quarter of the time i did ten years ago. so what's next? gardening? knitting?

I've been in the same boat, I've played also nothing but, Guild Wars 2 for most of the year and when I quit that, everything seems to have that, been there done that favor to it. There is a lack of AAA titles this year and No must haves this year like Skyrim, Witcher, etc. There isn't anything out there I want, I've also noticed a lack of demos, is the day of PC game demo's dead? I've been downloading and trying different MMO's trying to find something worth playing. There is also way, way too many remakes and a bad trend of add a few new features and then re-release the same game as (fill in the blank) II, III, etc.  It maybe too early but, so far I haven't see any thing great yet, come from all the Kickstarter's.

When it comes to the video game rut I find that forcing myself to play something other than what I've been currently playing helps shake me out of it.  Lately however not even that tactic is working hence my recent rekindling of my love affair with board wargames. 

At the end of the day I look forward to reading the rule book for my board game and then trying to sneak in some playtime during the weekend.  Setting up a board game is somewhat time consuming so in that regard it is not as easy to play as a video game.  It is therapeutic however to setup counters or minis on a board. 

Then there is the matter of what the little ones want.  For example, yesterday I planned on playing another scenario from Conflict of Heroes, a wargame I bought last week, but my daughter wanted to play monopoly with me.  What was I to do say no?  I'm sorry but I must lead my forces to victory during Operation Barbarossa? She doesn't even know what a panzer division is.

Don't know what part of Hell Hole Florida your in,I'll assume Miami.
Outside of Tampa the sun is out there's a nice breeze no humidity and I've been out and about all day without breaking a sweat.
That's a nice day considering I haven't been able to do that in 7 months around these here parts.

Between working full-time -  taking two classes so I can get out of my suck-ass job plus 2 15-year old kids I don't have much time for gaming.  When I do play something I play Strategic Command WW1 Breakthrough - but that's only for about an hour or two on the weekend.  It's tough to keep interested in gaming with all that going on.   :-[
