Seems a bit simplistic, but does address many of the divides within society. 
Years ago there was a book, Attack and Die, on the ACW.  It's point of view was that the culture of the Deep South, encouraged the bad tactics of constant aggression, which bled the south white.

He's assimilated a number of concepts that have been around for a while.

 -not necessarily certain of some of his assertions, but still interesting and with merit
- his map is wrong for Canada, particularly as you go west and north
- central Canada is definitely more Yankee land
- eastern Canada, east of Quebec is a combo of Appalachia and Yankee land IMO
My doctor wrote me a prescription for daily sex.

The best book to read on this is Albion's Seed, by David Hackett Fischer. He looks at  four regions of the East Coast, each of which was settled by one of four regions in England/Scotland. Hint: the Appalachians were settled by those on the border between England and Scotland.

And a fun fact: New England dishes like brown bread came about because the Puritans thought that tasted too good was sinful.
