Yeah but people already have their cells which may have a charge for a few days. People will be trying to call them at that number. You cant buy expensive sat phones then give them out.

He has no kids (or so he confesses), so I'm checking in with other cousins to see if they've heard anything from him.  He lives in Edmonton, the cousins live in Vancouver, and I live in Halifax.  We're literally spread across Canada.

The NYT reported this morning that the 10,000 estimated death toll figure in Tacloban is officially about 1700. More could come but there may be hope that this storm wasn't nearly as powerful as advertised. Still tragically powerful enough, but maybe not quite as bad as feared. Let's hope so.
