For you, Herman.  From today's Taipei Times.  There is a submarine arms race going on here.  Also, it is nice to know that a few of America's old WWII era boats are not simply rusting tourist attractions scattered across the States, but still on patrol.

Quote
Asia is in the midst of a submarine "buying spree" with most of the major powers planning substantial fleet increases over the next 20 years, new analysis published by the independent US Naval Institute concluded.

However, the analysis says that Taiwan has been trying to buy new submarines, but has been unable to find producing countries that are willing to "defy" political pressure from Beijing and make the sale.

"The only potential provider of submarines, the United States, does not build diesel-electric submarines," it says.

The analysis by military writer Kyle Mizokami says that Vietnam took delivery of a new submarine last week, Malaysia recently acquired its first and that Thailand plans to buy one soon.

Asian countries are buying submarines to "protect their recently acquired wealth," while another "more ominous driver" is the recent uptick in territorial disputes involving China.

The analysis comes as Washington defense writer Bill Gertz has published an article in The Washington Free Beacon claiming that China is testing a high-speed maneuvering torpedo that poses a threat to submarines.

Gertz said that one test was conducted near the South China Sea's Hainan Island where China's Type 094 attack submarines are based.

China is reportedly building at least seven classes of new submarines and warships, more than any other nation except the US, Gertz said.

A new report to be published later this month by the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission says that Taipei is considering designing and manufacturing its own submarines "with US and possibly other foreign technical assistance."

The report says that Taiwanese officials continue to stress to the commission the importance of acquiring submarines.

"During the Commission's recent trip to Taiwan, officials emphasized that Taiwan's ability to defend its forces against China's expanding and modernizing submarine fleet will continue to erode as its aging submarine force increasingly is unable to support Taiwanese Navy antisubmarine training," the report says.

Taiwan's current fleet of four submarines includes two former US vessels that were built in the 1940s and transferred to Taiwan in the 1970s.

Thanks for the heads up.  Why is Russia willing to provide Kilos to Vietnam (another rival to the PRC) but not the ROC?

A recent onsite photo I took of the Southern entrance to the Taiwan Strait.  (beyond that little protrusion of land on the right)

Well, the ROC is pretty marginalized, but to Taiwan's credit ... they persevere.  Also, there are now lots of economic ties and cultural ties between the two.  However, the CCP leadership has said that economic relationships is not a resolution to the political issue.  Unlike when I last lived here, 75% of population (based on polls) consider themselves to be Taiwanese and not Chinese.  Of course, the official language here is the same as the PRC, the character set here is "traditional" meaning maintaining more Chinese culture than the PRC, the local Taiwanese dialect is practically identical to the Fukinese dialect spoken in Fu Chien province on the other side of the Strait, DNA analysis of blood would show that most people here are are members of the Han (predominant Chinese race) more so than either you or I, customs are highly similar ...  However, despite all of that, I strongly respect their desire not to be ruled by the CCP even though I think it is a stretch to view that folks here are not Chinese.

The PLA continues improve its amphibious invasion capabilities:  landing craft, littoral denial missiles that could keep a US SAG at arm length, and lots of missiles targeted at objectives in Taiwan ...  In the meantime, most Taiwanese want to maintain the status quo.  Although Taiwan continues to buy/build weapons systems, mandatory conscription/training will soon come to an end.  A number of high ranking officers were recently found to be on the PRC's payroll.  The political leadership have personal economic ties to China; making them unreliable.  Taiwan has one of the lowest birthrates in Asia.  20% of marriages over the last decade have had one foreign spouse; most often a wife from the PRC.  Thus, like Tibet, China may simply colonize Taiwan over time without any real need for invasion.

(sorry for the long winded answer in your Harpoon thread)

Under the HDSII-NACV Battleset I'm trying the Alpha Strike mission. I stink. :D :D

I can't even get planes near the peninsula without getting shot up. I've tried recon...I've tried having F-18's with HARMS...nothing works. I realize I am learning. But the map isn't displaying targets on the peninsula anymore. Yet my planes are being destroyed. I've had them turn on radars to attempt to find the targets...but I don't see anything. Aye...I am lost with this game right now.

How am I supposed to become an Admiral like that?

There are more Gaelic speakers outside of Scotland than in Scotland, too.  :)

'Stealing' future brides from the PRC could very well be a Casus Belli.  Evidently, Chinese girls are only in demand once they reach the age of marriage.  Then, they are scarce.  If many are going overseas, it could cause tension.  I think that wars have actually been fought historically over such issues.

Herman,

Well, they are not being stolen (at least, by Taiwanese).  There are cases in China's countryside of girls being kidnapped to be raised as a future wife for a son.

What is driving the trend of PRC brides in Taiwan:

* Taiwanese women are some of the best educated with the best career prospects in Asia.

* Although many Taiwanese women reflect traditional "Chinese" values as wives, traditional men in this society still may find their mindset/education/employ-ability too threatening.

* Although many in the USA think China is a rich country, it is not.  There is still a great deal of poverty.  The average standard of living is much higher in Mexico (which is generally regarded as poor) than China.  These brides tend tend to come from Northern China which is the poorest area.  Economic development has mainly happened in the South and along the coastline.  These brides mainly come from the North.

Finally, as long as we are characterizing the Taiwanese mindset ...  (based on polls)  50% look favorably upon Japan.  6-7% look favorably upon China or the USA.  Yes, the Taiwanese have been totally brainwashed by "Hello Kitty".

The Pacific Rim is a very fertile area for scenario development.  China is constantly flexing its muscle among its neighbors.  Japan has a new hawkish President, and the constitution will probably be rewritten (to remove the pacifist orientation).  Everyone has disputed territorial claims here.  Earlier this year, a Taiwanese fisherman was machine gunned to death by a Filipino Coast Guard boat.  Taiwan ramped up naval exercises and pushed for a full inquest.  Things have settled down, but have not fully normalized with the PI.  China was weighing in on Taiwan's side; which Taiwanese neither needed or wanted.  However, they were disappointed by the USA not pushing for an inquest into the incident.  In the mean time, Chinese and Japanese air and naval forces are constantly playing chicken over a set disputed islands.  And I don't need to mention North Korea, since that one everyone knows about in the West.

Most recently both Taiwan and China have sent aid to the PI.  Both have been criticized for the relatively small amount.  (Taiwan has sent far more aid to Japan when there was a need.)  Of course, China is developing its capability as a regional superpower, but not for aiding the PI.  In Tacloban in the PI, both Chinese and Taiwanese nationals have evacuated the area fearing for their lives ... the Filipinos don't really see a distinction ... and there is simmering racism here besides nationalism.

So, you have many naval/air scenario possibilities here ... conflict by accident ... conflict by intention ... conflict started by private citizens with boats asserting national territorial rights ...

MarkShot

The PRC just defined a new Air Defense Zone over the Diaoyutai Islands (釣魚台) islands which the Japanese call Senkaku Islands (meaning there will be military air interdiction of violators).  China, Taiwan, and Japan all claim possession of these islands.  Also, they are a common flyover point of about 670 civilian flights per week.

MarkShot

It seems that the new Chinese ADZ also includes territory claimed by South Korea as well.  Well, this should be interesting.

Latest news out of the PRC is warning to the USA to keep from involving in China's internal affairs except that it seems to have all the makings of an international incident, and don't egg Japan on.  However, I think the Japanese are perfectly willing to take a more aggressive posture these days when it comes to military matters on their own ... they are not US' puppet.

From the China Post:

Quote
South Korea Complains to China

South Korea also complained Monday about the Chinese zone, which includes the airspace above a set of submerged rocks that are controlled by Seoul but also claimed by Beijing.

South Korea's Defense Ministry summoned China's military attache in Seoul, saying the zone is unacceptable because it was drawn unilaterally, according to ministry officials. Defense Ministry spokesman Kim Min-seok said South Korea's control over the area remains unchanged and that Seoul won't notify China when its planes pass through the region.

Act I: Onslaught

"In a carefully planned series of attacks, the Warsaw Pact begins a war against NATO.  Their goal is to seize West Germany, gutting NATO militarily and economically.  The Soviets will demand a high price for Germany's return, or assimilate its industry and technology for their own use."

"Submarines have traditionally lurked near harbours, hoping to catch ships leaving port, before they can lose themselves on the open ocean.  With the war underway, the waters off the Kola Peninsula are the best hunting ground in the world, if you can stay alive."

This scenario was inspired by the situation described in the "High Tide" compilation from Clash of Arms.
