By the way, in case you are wondering what the hotkey is to jump to the next unit, it's the Tab key.

I thought, "This game sounds familiar" when I downloaded it. Looking through the manual, it became even more familiar.

That's because I wrote the %*(@# thing. LOL. How soon we forget.

I grabbed the game.

I'm curious. There have been, what, 3-4 variations on this game so far? All about the same scale. Can anyone give a rundown on the progression and which one is best? I got the impression that the first game kind of sucked and then it was improved in a newer game. Am I correct in assuming that this is the earliest?

Wrath of War.
Nations of Destruction.
Time of Explosions.

Did I miss any?  ;D

1) WW2: Road to Victory
2) WW2: Time of Wrath
3) Storm Over the Pacific
4) Time of Fury
5) Strategic War in Europe

All use the same basic engine being tweaked and modified with each iteration.

Graphics and UI have generally been improved with each release, however the modders generally do a much better job in the graphics department.

None were really ever finished before the developers moved onto their next release.

If you owned 1) you got 2) for free.

4) is the latest "full scale" version of the base game.

5) was supposed to have been released as a free update to 4) but never was.

The latest and much needed patch for 4) has been in public beta and I believe a subsequent non-public beta since February of last year with no sign of it being finished any time soon.

In essence 2) was a free patch for 1) (or possibly 1) could be seen as an Early Access  for 2) before people actually did Early Access), 3) was a new game on the same engine, 4) was a paid for patch for 2) which cost more than the base game, 5) was a free variant of 4) which you had to pay for !

As to which is best I'd go for Strategic Command, Commander Europe at War or Gary Grigsby's World at War a World Divided  :)

This sums it up perfectly.
(I own all of them, but got more and more disappointed, as new features would be introduced, while old bugs and issues with the overall game play balance were still untouched. Now I play neither of them.)

In my opinion, with the GS 3 upgrade mod, the best Strategic European game experience currenly. It's possibly the best one so far to capture the boardgame tabletop feel.
