Game updates are paid for but bug fixes are free i believe as is this one.  :)

I hear you but an upgrade from 2.xx to 3.0 is extra content and big engine changes and you don't have to buy the update (unless you play online, which could be a problem)

Yeah I'm still stuck at 2.0.  Contemplating the upgrade but I don't really play this to death.

There is a big difference between 2.x and 3.0. You should check out some videos and AAR's as that may help you make the decision.
