OMG.  I'm actually rather speechless about this new law.  Disturbing to say the least.  And on a side note, it's good to see that women are getting more rights under the new Islamic government.   ::)

Egyptian husbands will soon be legally allowed to have sex with their dead wives - for up to six hours after their death.
The controversial new law is part of a raft of measures being introduced by the Islamist-dominated parliament.
It will also see the minimum age of marriage lowered to 14 and the ridding of women's rights of getting education and employment.

If it wasn't so sick, it would actually be funny.  Its like the ultimate insult to remove universal human rights from women...even after they are dead.

I was attempting (unsuccessfully) to understand this through some kind of cultural significance.

The best I could come up with was they maybe they were trying to prevent their wife from becoming someone's 72 virgins in the afterlife?

Like I said, I can't really wrap my head around that one.

Hey! In Syria it's legal to have sex with a Camel as long as he is a male Camel!

Also say, does this apply to brain-dead women who are still breathing (i.e Megan Fox for an example)? :D

Since we're sorta on the topic, here's a neat little article discussing how Khomeini came to power by discussing the religious implications of bizarre sexual questions, both real and hypothetical.

Needless to say, though it deals with Iran, it doesn't stray far from the OP.

This is just another example of how little thought there was given to foreign policy during the Arab Spring.  Not that anyone thought about sex with the dead, but across the Islamic world women's rights necessarily degrade dramatically under an Islamic government.  That should not have surprised anyone except the willfully ignorant.

The sad part is that this is a very real issue in Afghanistan.  I'll find the source, but it's something like over 50% in some provinces of men who commit this abhorant act.

Btw, quite semi-topic.

Egypt recently unilaterally broke an important part of the Israeli-Egyptian peace treaty.
They were supposed to allow trade of natural resources, and sell gas to us.
And few days ago, after the pipeline transferring the gas was blown up by islamists once again, they just decided to stop the trade completely.

Add to this the destruction of the Israeli embassy in Cairo and the unwillingness of Egypt to allow us to create a new embassy there.
And the parliament being taken over completely by islamists, who also voted off all the presidential candidates they didn't like, thus placing their boy in power.

And you end up with a very promising future for Mid-East peace :P
