Great Canadian writer.  And No Birds Sang is one of my most favourite war books. Great first hand description story of the Canadian Army in Italy during WWII.

Ow, just saw this. I'll always remember him as the Canadian Wildlife Service guy sent out with insane underfunding to live (perhaps fictionally) with the wolves:
