I played F -19 stealth fighter on the C64....but not this

Wait, your right, so did I. This game looks a lot like F-19. I wonder if it's just the PC version?

One of the model manufacturers, Revell I think, sold an F-19 model long before it became unclassified. The edges were soft and rounded, not at all like the multi-faceted F-117A.

Tom Clancy also wrote about a "cathedral bell" shaped stealth aircraft, in Red Storm Rising.

The disinformation of the USAF was pretty impressive. Back in the very early 1980's, I turned down a classified assignment to Nevada, to provide weather support to the nascent stealth fighter wing.

Even this game has a variant where there is an internal cannon. As most of you know, all weapons are kept internal to the bomb bay, with no gun capability at all.

During Desert Storm, when we were briefed on the REAL capabilities of this airplane, it became apparent to everyone that the abilities exceeded our wildest imaginations..that the RCS, or radar cross section, of this airplane was microscopic compared to all other aircraft in the world.

This was why they went in first, to destroy the Iraqi target acquisition systems. Like Lt. Gen Hoerner, the USAF Commander in theater told my Colonel and I, and a bunch of others, after the first night of the war, the Iraqi's would be blind, and deaf..as their C3 (command, control, and communications) would be greatly degraded.

Amazing aircraft, and an amazing game.

Both games were great, i still load them up on Dosbox from time to time. My favorite missions in cold war and limited war settings were taking pictures of enemy terrorist camps, ships, etc, also dropping supplies to agents behind the lines or landing on a secret airstrip.

So another dumb question....if this was an old dos game, how does this work with the gog version?  Does it include some kind of dos emulator?

Most of the DOS games on GOG are already wrapped in a DOSbox configuration right out of the install package. It's actually pretty slick. Just install, read about the old-timey keyboard commands, and dive right into the pixillated goodness.

Interesting...

download and install was easy.....

starting the game...you have to adjust your joystick each time...kind of wish the settings would stick, but not a huge deal

almost forgot about the old days DRM....finding a picture in the manual to prove you own the game:)  Wish they could have taken this out...you get an aircraft chart, nut when I alt-tab to look at it, messes up my screen

Did a training mission....flight controls were pretty easy, especially compared to all the modern flight simulators where I can never figure out...got to fire a few mavericks, of course missed though:)  Will have to read the manual to figure things out....

Not bad for an old game so far and for only $5...I will have to get into the campaign stuff over the weekend.

Lots of great memories of this game, but flight simulators are definitely a genre where I choose not to go  backwards.

I tend to agree with UCG - often these games were great because of the time they were in. I haven't revisited a "classic" from my youth that I got the same feeling of euphoria from back in the 90's.

One thing I do think though is games were games back then. They seem to be more work nowadays.

Yes, I had one of those models when I was a kid.

I also have two copies of JD Webster's Air Superiority tabletop game, which came out in '86 or '87 and has the old "F-19" guesswork version with the curvy bell shape represented.  I think it was even listed as being supersonic and able to carry AtA missiles in that one.  Surprising because all the other aircraft data cards were pretty much right on the money. 

I'm pretty sure the real look and info started coming out in the press after Op Just Cause in Panama ('88) and started filtering into common knowledge.  That was the first conflict they admitted to using them and went somewhat public IIRC.  So most gaming stuff after that point had switched to the real F-117 look, and not the "F-19" guesstimate.

A big plus! One of the main reasons why I've never owned a gaming console is the controller.

I  second Fleet Defender. That was one tough sim. I will break down and get this and looking at Sword of the Samurai too.
