Godzilla Reboot coming 2014

I agree, this reboot was good.  Don't mind my nitpicking or let it fool you into thinking I didn't like the new Godzilla.  I loved it!  It was light years better than Godzilla 1998 with Ferris Bueller.

And I think my disjuncture with Dr. Serizawa would have been largely cured if he had been named Dr. Yamane, who after all exists to marvel at Godzilla and deliver some exposition. And has both eyes. But naming this character Serizawa is illustrative of most of the problems of the script (and some of the presentation issues): things are done because they seem convenient and/or cool at the moment but break the film. (If they had named Watanabe's character Dr. Martin Yamane, I would have been cheer-laughing at the clever audaciousness. Every time "Serizawa" was said my brain WTFd in distraction.)

all I can say is that I really enjoyed that movie!  as reboots go it's 100% gooderest.

depending on how young they are, I'd recommend you consider spoiling them ahead of time about BrodyMom's death early in the film -- the trailers have long spoiled that, but just in case. It isn't bloody or anything, but it's emotionally traumatic.

Other than that, it should be pretty safe. Loud sometimes when Godzilla is roaring at the screen.

They're 13 and 15 and despite my having tried to shelter them as best as I can, they can sometimes be more cynical than I. Although I clearly remember my grandmother telling me how cynical *I* was when I was 13...

Speaking of loud, if the kids don't like noise, stay away from IMAX.  Godzilla roaring is loud in a regular theatre, in IMAX it would be deafening.

You know, it occurred to me the other day, when the credits rolled, the audience applauded.  I got to the movies frequently, and it's been a long time since I've experienced a movie audience applauding a movie.

True, the human story per se doesn't gum up the works in any way, mainly by staying (mostly) focused on the Muto threat from start to finish. (A little non-focus for flavor was fine.)

I had more problems with the plot than MovieBob did (and didn't share some of his other problems really), but I agree with the gist of his followup: "I may not have liked it, but I respect it."

Agreed!  Yamane totally would have made better sense here than Serizawa.  Serizawa was tormented by his own demons and ultimately used his invention to kill Gojira.  Yamane on the other hand wanted to study the beast and use him to find a cure for radiation sickness. 

They used the name Serizawa instead because they probably thought he was a cooler character than Yamane.  Since most viewers in the American audience are not familiar with the lore they can get away with this.  When Serizawa first appeared in the new movie I have to admit I choked up a little because I thought they did well to pay tribute to him.  Only later after you pointed out the flaws did it dawn on my that the new Serizawa wanted to study the creature for somewhat similar reasons to Yamane.  Yeah it doesn't make sense.

...and don't mind us Star.  We're a couple of Godzilla geeks geeking out at some geeky flaws but we still enjoyed the movie.   8)

Just saw it and it wasn't half bad and the Wife liked it too. The Big 'G' gets my vote.
