So the rumors were true about Dovetail

I really enjoy Dovetail's Train Simulator so it'll be interesting to see what they do with Flight Simulator X.

That will just kill the thriving add-on marketplaces like Aerosoft, Justflight, FSPilotShop, Simmarket etc.  That is if they start publishing stuff on Steam.
If these are not compatible with certain add-ons found outside steam then that won't be good.

I have a suspicion that this Steam version is only open to add-ons made by Dovetail.

also, there's disturbing speculation that Microsoft will finally turn off their FSX activation servers since it is available in Steam.

Nope.  The developer must specifically make a P3D version / installer.   There is also a difference between P3D and P3Dv2.  P3D installers don't work with P3Dv2 out of the box.

There is also a FSX to P3D migration tool.

Everything I have tried so far works, though some have needed additional work (like adding copies of the prepar3d.exe renamed as fs9.exe or fsx.exe).  I haven't found a freeware or payware addon plane for FSX that doesn't work for Prepar3d.

It is very difficult to find out this stuff because there is some lawyereese that prevents people from talking about how to make things work for Prepar3d because Prepare3d is not licensed for entertainment, only education.  You must not enjoy Prepar3d....Prepar3d is a learning experience.

Yeah there are workarounds.  Fooling the installer that your FSX is your P3D.  O0
