Rocket fire out of the Lebanon reported

Rocket fire from Lebanon hit northern Israel Friday, a move that has led Israeli officials to suspect Lebanese militants may be joining the four-day conflict between Israel and Gaza militants.

The Lebanese military said three rockets were fired toward Israel around 6 a.m. and the Israelis retaliated by firing about 25 artillery shells on the area. Israeli military spokesman Lt. Col. Peter Lerner confirmed that the Israeli military had responded to the new attack with force.

Lebanese troops and United Nations peacekeepers later began searching the area, and the military said it was trying to find out who was behind the attack. 

Lerner said Israel has suspected that Lebanese militants may try to join the fray as Israel exchanges fire with Islamic Hamas militants in Gaza. However, he said it was still unclear whether Friday's attack was "symbolic or something more substantial."

Southern Lebanon is a stronghold of the Shiite militant group Hezbollah, which has battled Israel numerous times. However, recent fire from Lebanon has been blamed on radical Palestinian factions in the area and Hezbollah has not been involved in the ongoing offensive. It has largely refrained from engaging Israel since a monthlong war in 2006 when it fired thousands of rockets into Israel and was pummeled by Israeli airstrikes in response.

Israel's Netanyahu: World Pressure Won't Stop Gaza Offensive

Israel's prime minister says he will not cave in to international pressure to stop a military offensive in the Gaza Strip. Benjamin Netanyahu told a news conference Friday that Israel has already struck 1,000 targets in Gaza and will continue its offensive until rocket fire out of Gaza is halted. "No international pressure will prevent us from acting with all power," he said.

However, the United Nations human rights chief voiced serious doubts that the operation complied with international law. "We have received deeply disturbing reports that many of the civilian casualties, including of children, occurred as a result of strikes on homes. Such reports raise serious doubt about whether the Israeli strikes have been in accordance with international humanitarian law and international human rights law," U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay said in a statement. Netanyahu said Israel is using twice the force it used during a similar offensive in 2012. More than 100 Palestinians have been killed.

JERAUSALEM - Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke yesterday evening (Jul. 9) with several world leaders, including UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and US Secretary of State John Kerry regarding Operation 'Protective Edge' and its implications. Prime Minister Netanyahu said in his conversations that no country in the world would agree to suffer relentless missile attacks and infiltration attempts by sea and via terror tunnels. Hamas is perpetrating a double war crime by deliberately trying to attack Israeli civilians while using the civilian population in Gaza as human shields, Netanyahu told them. Netanyahu placed the blame for civilian casualties in Gaza on Hamas.

Prime Minister Netanyahu added that Hamas is known throughout the world as a terrorist organization and said that the international community must strongly condemn the continual firing by Hamas and the other terrorist organizations at Israeli cities.

The UN Security Council is scheduled to convene later today to discuss the situation in Israel.

Netanyahu reported that his conversations were effective: "Today I spoke with several world leaders. I appreciated their expressions of strong support for our right and our duty to defend ourselves, and this is what we will continue to do."

Netanyahu will speak with additional world leaders in the coming days. PM Netanyahu has further issued a statement to the international community, stating: "Hamas and other terrorist groups in Gaza are firing rockets on cities throughout the State of Israel – on Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Haifa, Beer Sheba, Sderot and other cities in Israel. No country on earth would remain passive in the face of hundreds of rockets fired on its cities and Israel is no exception."

"Today we expanded our operations against Hamas and the other terrorist groups in Gaza. We will continue to protect our civilians against Hamas attacks on them. Hamas, by contrast, is deliberately putting Palestinian civilians into harm's way. It embeds its terrorists in hospitals, schools, mosques and apartment buildings throughout the Gaza Strip. Hamas is thus committing a double war crime: It targets Israeli civilians, while hiding behind Palestinian civilians. This operation could take time. We are resolved to defend our families and our homes."

i wonder how they are able to smuggle thousands of longer range rockets into Gaza?

Isarel should go in in the south of the strip , annex a 1 click wide stretch along thee Egyptian border, resettle the inhabitants, flatten it ...and dig a deep trench almost a channel , microfarture the base rock with large explosions where its necessary and connected the pool to the sea (that should render tunnels impossible to dig for anybody without the latest Swiss tunnel drilling machine right from the Gotthard mountain range) ...  yes, there will be lamentation in the UNO councils but any resolution get blocked by USA veto (or i hope so?), and that's it.
Every Iron Dome rocket is 50 000 bucks spend  ...the Gaza Pool project is cheaper in the longrun
