They had even done this before, sorta. Space Horse Thor, Frog Thor, etcetera. Plus just about every hero has had a female version (Spider-Woman, She-Hulk, Miss Thing, and more etceteras).

Hell, I loved Rogue after she stole Miss Marvel's powers. :P

Well, according to the Poetic Edda, Thor did once dress up as a woman in a bridal dress to infiltrate the giant Thrym's lair after said giant stole the hammer Mjolnir and demanded the very lovely goddess Freya as a bride in exchange...

However, once inside Thor drank three whole barrels of mead, then he grabbed his hammer back and proceeded to kill off all the giants and level the place.

^^ And in fact even that has sort-of happened before, though not as "Thor" per se -- a blonde earth-woman is often chosen to be given the power of one of the Valkyries.

That was my first guess this time, too; a Valkyrie gets the hammer. But it's apparently a human woman, just don't know who yet.

Loki (or Allura, or heck even Hel) swapping out the real Thor's gender would be rather more interesting and daring.

Meanwhile over in the movies, Tom Hiddleston has said he'd like to see Jaime Alexander take over, switching from Sif to Loki, whenever he leaves.

Well, she doesn't look like she can hit worth anything, but most of that comes from techno-magic anyway. Some amazing cosplay at least! Adds more meaning to the Japanese pun Zettai Ryouiki == "absolute territory". Rank A. (Should probably be an honorary Rank S!)  >:D
