Apparently it was high in the sky, flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lampur.  CNN is reporting that the plane was brought down by Buk surface to air missile system.

WTF would any of them shoot at a commercial airliner at the apex of its flight arc?  Drunkards, or one trying to smear the other?

not in this instance.  it seems lots of carriers have been using the airspace.  Lufthansa just suspended flights using the airspace.  SMH
