I am still hung up on the idea they are doing ethnic cleansing of minority religions. Given these groups existed, there must have been some tolerance on the part of the old regime. Anyway, what is wrong with city states of various ethnicitys?

The other point, to Gus's point of them hiding behind civilians, is that for them to advance from city to city grabbing territory, they must have been out in the open without human shields. So hitting just the fighters can be done.

You may have a point, is there a distinction? I thought genocide was killing all the people, whereas ethnic cleansing was just removing them (maybe, maybe not some killing).
