To go along with the approaching Halloween season I am practicing some thread necromancy. Looking to finally pick up Grim Dawn if the price is right later today. Anyone still playing it or interested? If not I may check out Path of Exile, a game I know nothing about.

I can't speak for Grim Dawn, but Path of Exile is really good.  It's a massive game, and the skill tree has to be seen to be believed.

I read a lot of reviews of PoE before I downloaded it, and the consensus seemed to be that the game can be played, and enjoyed, completely FTP.  The pay items provide cosmetic and other enhancements, but aren't required to enjoy the game.  The game is also highly rated by players that play it.

To me it was more of the walk around, kill monsters, take loot, all in 3rd person, and while that wasn't a bad thing it's just not what I am currently looking for.  Joining a guild and playing with other like-minded players would probably make a huge difference.

Not more so than any other game in this genre.  I urge you to give it a try.  I forgot to mention that the game drips with atmosphere, and the voice acting is far above average for a computer game (not something I normally look for but it's so rare I notice it when it happens).

I tried Path of Exile when it first came out.  There was much less variety in it compared to other action RPGs in the same genre at the time.  I was specifically bummed by the lack of monster variety after playing a few hours.  When you entered an area, it would be mostly one type of monster over & over & over for a long stretch with a rare second type occasionally appearing.  That was my biggest impression of it at the time.

It also made my video card attempt to run at approximately 3,000 fps (hot!) despite having Vsync on and there were steady reports of video optimization being needed.  I expect they've fixed these issues by now, but I can't say for sure since I've not played it since.  They also probably added more content too.


I keep hearing that Grim Dawn is awesome right now.  But it's not finished.  Last I checked, only about 1/4 of the campaign was in.   They haven't been moving terribly quickly either.  :-[  Fortunately there have been some good RPGs released recently.  Wasteland 2 is my current wonderful muse but I always have other "old trustys" always ready to go such as the superb Tales Of Maj'Eyal (TOME).

Micro transactions?  There are no micro transactions in TOME. 

You can play it for Free.  If you want to donate (the intention of the paid version) for $7, it gives you a small universal "bank box" which allows you to exchange a handful of looted items between your different characters. Which isn't really needed.  It's not an MMO and doesn't have Micro transactions.  O0

It's pretty much a mix between a Roguelike and a classic RPG, with some of the best points of both.  Don't let the static artwork (which is kinda cool IMO) scare you away.  There is a lot of customization and replayability.  The interface is slightly unusual but you get the hang of it quickly.

I've had ridiculous amounts of play time out of TOME compared to the entry fee.
