I have come to the conclusion that Sid Meyer's Beyond Earth is nothing more than a big mod for Civilization V.
Regardless of how good a PC game may be it will always have its detractors and no matter how bad a PC game may be it will always have its fans.

I had a chance to interview Sid Meier last year (very nice guy). I thought his most interesting comment was about nukes in Civ, and the difference between players and AI. http://www.foreignpolicy.com/articles/2014/04/11/you_must_first_invent_the_universe_sid_meier_interview_civilization

Well I initially thought it was a new skin for Civ V and after playing the demo there is no doubt it's still Civilisation - and very close to V. However, I think there are plenty of changes in there to call it Civ V Redux. Worth full price? From the demo, I had enough of a sense of change to warrant a yes.

I'm just not sure what else they could've done to change it though...Civ is Civ is Civ. They've all had their "upgrades" and all charged full price on release for "the new iteration". There's no doubt you're playing a Civ game here and you could indeed as I did argue it's a reskin - but there are a lot of changes to make it Civ Space.

I expect modders could've given something very close (hence the reskin thought)

It's like Civ4 Colonization was. Not just a mod but a new game based on a slightly modified existing game engine. Nothing wrong with that except the price shouldn't have been for a new game. $29.99 would have been a fair price.

Man I thought I was having a solid play through until I looked at the diplomacy screen.  Points wise I'm in last freaking place and more than 150 points behind the leader.  I've been controlling the rate of growth on my cities and artificially capping them.  Little did I know just how much population counts toward your score.  Damn it!  I've mastered controlling out of control health with population control and now I need to unleash the horny in my cities to produce more people and degrade my health with apparently STDs.  Damn you Sid Meier!

For what it's worth the same thing happened to me, but I'm going to ignore the score and soldier through, in the hopes I can eke out one of the victories.

If there's only a 150 points between you and 1st place then all is not lost. That's not a very large difference.

CIV in Space STDs!!!!!!!!  Haven't you ever seen Ice Pirates?  Don't you know what Space Herpes can do?

No all is not lost and I'm not panicking.  I'm sticking to my plan to research what I think are paths to a victory condition.

Well I'm a little annoyed that there is no diplomatic option to offer protection to colonies.  Right now ARC is taking out one of my trade partners no big deal except its a nice cheap source of culture for me.   They are really forcing me into declaring war right now.

Igore the rankings. It won't count when a civ achieves a one of those thematic victories.

It is just a gauge on their power. Of course those higher up can actually do research and build the victory wonders faster. But a mid tier faction can still pull off a sneaky win.

This is what makes the game quite different from Civ V.

Speaking of sneaky, I'm just now learning the ropes of the espionage system, and I'm hoping I can use that to pull out a victory.
