I had the same thought. Take Gemma's phone and make the call. Jax answers because it's Gemma. Then the conversation goes like, "Hey Jax. This is Juice. I've got your mama's phone. She was helping me get out of Charming, because I was there when she killed Tara. No, she's ok even though she was going to kill me too. Want me to put her on?".

I suspect Sutter will take a much more circuitous route to Jax finding out the truth. As much as I love the show, often the obvious move is ignored in favor of the "wtf" moment.
