Yeah but that is what makes for fun stories! And if we manage to complete it we can always start another.
Part of the excitement is that you won't know how long you'll be playing. And chances are pretty slim you'll draw the short straw two times in a row. :)

As for the moment to take over: isn't it also possible for a ruler to reign for lots of years in the game? Wouldn't it be better to make it and OR situation; either a new heir takes over OR X amount of time has passed?

Sure if you want to even out the play time. I was just thinking that having each person play an entire character would give more flavour to each ruler.

Sure! Sounds like a fun thing as long as every player is ok with the possibility to either play very long or very short.

For those interested in playing the collaborative game: on which level should we play (Duke, King)? And which nation / duchy has our interest?
I have every DLC up to and including Sons of Abraham.

  I'm playing Burgundy in Charlemagne.  Charles is "wise" in this run and I'm next in line to be King if he makes Emperor.

  It has some period flavor: the Pagan German Tribes (PGT) pack a whallop.
