Martok - I don't know if it's possible to have an "anti-boner"...but I now have one.

Meanwhile, I learned today (as an aside while reading on something else) that the Mosul area is historically important for more than being a strategic crossroads.

It was also the local region for Ninevah, capital of one of the Assyrian, or I guess rather the Neo-Assyrian Empire.

So a Syrian militant group would want to take the area for reasons of historical connection and symbolic meaning.

Depends on what historical connection that might be.

Remember that the Taliban douchebags wrecked a bunch of ancient historically significant statues in Asia because it was an affront to their Islamic beliefs.  ::)

^^ Good point. I wouldn't expect them to leave the Ninevah reconstruction ruins alone, across the river.

Still, Baghdad connected thematically to Babylon, downriver, and that didn't seem to be a problem when the Muslims took over long ago.
