Well, a good launch day for me.  I bought a Cobra Mk. III and hate it.  I'm going back to my kitted out Viper sooner rather than later.  I just love the obscene speed and boom and zoom of the Viper.  I was always partial to the energy fighters.

I was a bit of an arse and went to the newbie systems.   I didn't grief, but I was particularly mean to Wanted newbies.  I actually scored a newb with a 4800k bounty..he must've been up to no good.

Collected mostly 200 or 300 credit bounties off the new guys.  Making sure the law is firmly laid down.

Just started.  So...setting up the joystick really kinda sucks balls, doesn't it?
I can tell you what else would suck balls  :(

Well, it's working this morning. Fired it up 7 times going in and out absolutely fine.

No system updates. No software updates. No game updates.

That leads me to jump to one obvious conclusion (especially given other people were OK)...server

I don't know what else it could be. Nothing has changed on my system overnight and it isn't because it was rebooted because it was rebooted over a dozen times yesterday

JD, there is one single thing that may be the cause on your side (at least i witnessed it on my side)
ED client doesn't like a system which was revoked from  'sleep' mode  and/or a PC that had been running all kind of applications used for some time and then closed (without giving resources back to the OS correctly)

I had the same problem  (dark grey screen), killed the task, and fresh rebooted ...and then it worked.
I had a astonishing smooth first day without hickups for an MMO launch.

Got a little ventures and took a verboten salvage mission of a wreck ...now the problem is to smuggle the 'prototype plans* into the station... so i buzzed through the door with the Cobra, ...evaded the scan ...but could not reduce the speed enuf to not bang against the rear wall of the station ;-)  ...and even with shields up and not a really high speed ...it was unforgiving!

now came the persistent world stuff :) ... i flew back to that starsystem with a new Cobra for 18k insurance bucks, checked all USSs and of course ...the items were not to be found again, logged out (Real Life) came back later... checked USSs again and of course no luck ...the 3h mission timeabout to expire... had to log out (RL !)  the time expired ...log on later in the eve and found a message from the contractee which went something like this:
"We knew its hard to get those plans , that why we asked you.  We give you some lifeline and grand additional 18h to find us some" 8)

on the other -not so persistent- hand: the rare salvage items are not system-taggeded ... i was able to solve another salvage mission, by checking every USS in my start system found one Rebel plan and later a second one needed (floating around with enuf others) in the target system given in the message... So a Rebel plan is a Rebel plan is a Rebel plan ...it doesn't seem to matter where you pick 'rare salvage items' up  its just a item-category, like Coffee ...that could be ridiculous when it get to Black Boxes...  immersion-wise

go to Australia to find me the Black Box of MH 370 ... went to local scrap airplane yards on the way... found a generic Black Box lying around there, Here you go. Malaysia authorities, ...OK CMDR , Thx here are your credits ::)

Nah. I performed many reboots yesterday MG and each time I booted in, I started ED only to have it lock up.

then its ED server / internet connection  O0

I updated and ran everything fine last night. However, within about 10 minutes, I got kicked to the main menu due to a lost connection with the server. This was in solo mode. Annoying  right?

Indeed.

I'm convinced I couldn't get to the server for whatever reason and that prevented the game from actually loading at all....I have no other answer. Reboots, no updates - nothing happened between last night and this morning that would "fix it" my end.

I waited to buy this until it was out because I've been burned so many times here lately by pre-orders and the like.  A side benefit of having waited is that I get everything all at once, all the months of additions and patches.  Like watching a great moving having never seen a trailer.

After accidentally downloading the combat trial first...I finally got it fired up at 4am this morning.  I tell you its almost as if they read my mind about the perfect space game!  Its like a blend of everything I loved from Independence War.

I haven't read much at all about the future plans, but I'm hoping they add some Eve like community features.  Cordon off a section of the galaxy and let players own stations and fight over them, etc.

GDS_Starfury

Im going to give it another month.
Jarhead - Yeah. You're probably right.

Gus - I use sweatpants with flannel shorts to soak up my crotch sweat.

Banzai Cat - There is no "partial credit" in grammar. Like anal sex. It's either in, or it's not.

Mirth - We learned long ago that they key isn't to outrun Star, it's to outrun Gus.

Martok - I don't know if it's possible to have an "anti-boner"...but I now have one.

Gus - Celery is vile and has no reason to exist. Like underwear on Star.

Great. I don't mind the thing having to check in every few minutes but if it can't, then just don't update the prices and ship locations, don't kick me back to the main menu!

I probably should not have fired it up this morning, because now (an hour in to my work day) all I can think is "I want to play Elite...I want to play Elite..."  lol

That is a good feeling to have. Don't fight it.

This is pretty disturbing news.  I was kind of assuming that, like Rise of Flight or Battle of Stalingrad, you'd only have to login to play Elite solo. The idea that momentarily losing a server connection kicks you out of the game really sucks.
