Elite: Dangerous. I broke down.

I solved the problem. It was my FSD. It was not up to the task, so I replaced it for a better one with reduced mass and increased fuel usage per jump. That got me there...you live and you learn.

Anyway, any of you Viper drivers ever take on an Anaconda? If you lived to tell about it, what weapons did you use to take it down?  So far, my multi-cannons and burst lasers are just pissing it off.

Simple, target the Power Plant.  You can bring it to 0 far faster than you can get through the armor for a straight kill.  If the power plant goes, the ship goes soon after.

You'll never get through the armor, and all you'll accomplish if you try to dink it is get the cops involved and they'll fly in front of your guns. 

Take burst or beam lasers and gimbled multcannons, target the power plant.  Keep flight assist off as much as you can and never let it bring its nose guns to bear. 

Shield cell banks are also important as you'll be taking a lot of fire from turrets.  If you've got enough of those, you'll be pretty well invincible as you tear into the power plant and eventually kill the Anaconda.

EDIT NOTE: DO NOT take on Elite level Anacondas.  They have plasma accelerators and can one shot you.

So far I've only gone after small game so I have not had the need to target sub-systems. I'll still have to get used to thinking outside that box. Makes perfect sense for the larger vessels.

I presume you still need to punch through its shields in order to target the power plant? Even that seemed to be pretty difficult in the brief encounter I had with the Anaconda. I think I could have managed it, but I did not want to run the risk of losing my ship.

Where do you find the space in your Viper to put all this stuff?  How many shield cell banks do you have? What have you sacrificed in terms of modules to install them? I am fresh out of room and I cannot think of sacrificing anything else.

Yes, you need to take out the shields, that's what your burst lasers are for.  I honestly prefer them to beams, at least at the higher end.  Chewing through the shields is the hard part, and that's why you need to really know your stuff with flight assist off and keep out of the front arc.

Shield cell space is the problem with the Viper, it's got limited room for expansion.  I replaced my class 3 slot with Shield Cells, and even then it does not tend to be enough against ships like the Anaconda. 

This is why some Bounty Hunters lean to the Cobra and even Asp.  More Shield Cell space.  You need more skill for the kill with the Viper.  The Cobra, for all its drawbacks is a bit of easy mode due to its internals.

Eh, I farm anything short of Elite Anacondas in a Viper.  Once you've got down how to pop them, Anacondas are very easy Viper kills.  The ship you don't want to take on in a Viper is the Python.  It will wreck you. 

Imperial Clippers and Federal Dropships can also be an issue because they like to ram.

First couple of times I took one on I got trashed too.  I really think that Anacondas are weak against Vipers, Eagles and Cobras though.  Especially Cobras.  If you use your superior maneuverability you can keep out of an Anaconda's prime firing arc.  If you're adept at using no flight assist, you can shred them.  The thing a Viper can do is hug an Anaconda's rear quarter, and even direct six and put fire right on either the drives or power plant.  The Anaconda can't deal with that. 

Problem lies with Elite, well equipped Anacondas.  With a Plasma Accelerator backed by Rail Guns, an Elite level Anaconda can rip anything to bits with one shot.  So I tend to avoid them. 

I've got extreme confidence in a high level Viper.  It's got few peers outside of the Python. 

Heck, with a bit of guts and a lot of whiskey I'd try an Anaconda in an Eagle.  That might actually be a good matchup.  If you make your ship geared for Anaconda popping, Rail Guns and Cannons, you can eat them for lunch.

now clearly Elite reduces that list to 1 thing and it certainly sounds like I wont be drinking less.

Well, I was.  I tried flying my Lakon Type 6 tonight in my current...ahem...happy state.  Nothing doing.  It's safely in dock for now.

Pretty much anything is more forgiving than Elite.  It's a game that punishes you pretty harshly for even the most mundane of mistakes. 

Regardless, you won't be sorry getting into this game.  It will keep you more on your toes than Pining ever did.
